Game runs at roughly 3-4 fps
Hey all, anyone got any suggestions as to the cause of, or how I could possibly fix this?

I've tried out the previous kickstarter demos to test out too, and this issue is also present in the more recent ones. However the original kickstarter demo from 2015 runs pretty much flawlessly.

Thanks.

PC Specs:
CPU: Intel Core i7 3770-K 3.50Ghz
GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX 980
RAM: 8GB
OS: Windows 10

Edit:
I've managed to bump it up to 13-15 fps give or take by running the game as administrator. Still not what I would consider playable, but it's better.

So, I can actually answer this one. For me, I had to run it as an administrator to get the game to run at proper FPS. Hopefully this works for you :)

It runs a bit better than that for me with a very similar system but there are times when the frames seem to drop. It really shouldn't be something that happens in a 2D game like this.

I would assume that this game is made in Game Maker? .. if so they need to go through and optimize a lot of stuff. I know from experience, even though its just a 2D engine you can really mess things up if you do it wrong and the game can wind up running way slower than it should.

Other than that though this game has been amazing so far, a really cool twist on the sonic-like subgenre. Yes that's right, Sonic-like, it's a sub-genre now .. this .. freedom planet .. I look forward to more.

I have a really similar computer, but I have an i5 and I forgot which Geforce amongst other things. But, if you have one, try plugging in a controller. That fixed it for me.

Awesome! It helped a little thanks. Unfortunately the framerate is still running at about 15fps but it's a hell of an improvement.

I believe it runs on Clickteam Fusion. But great to hear the game itself is good, looking forward to playing it properly if I can get things running stable.

And I couldn't agree more in regards to looking forward to more games in this style, I loved Freedom Planet, as well as what I played from that working demo I tried out.

This didn't work sadly, Thanks for the suggestion though.

I'm also having this problem. The game ran unplayably slow the first time or two that I ran it, but starting running better (playable, but not great) after maybe the second or third time I ran it. I didn't make any changes between running the game each time. I wonder if the "run as administrator" fix and the "plug in controller" fix are actually just people running the game enough that it works better and not actually made better by these fixes.

I can't enjoy a fast-pased game like this at this framerate, so I'm going to hold off until an update or a fix is found. I want to play this game in its full glory!

Ah yea, Fusion is similar to GM and it has the same kind of drawbacks. I would guess that optimization is still the culprit. It definitely behaves a lot like some of my more amateur game projects in GM in regards to performance (definitely a lot more polished in actual gameplay though :P).

At least it's still playable for me though, it's just a few levels where the framerate just seems to dip inexplicably.

Maybe, just maybe, try a virtual machine?

Right click the .exe and disable compatibility mode. It has something to do with a windows 10 updated that screwed controller support or something of the sort.

Just had a check now and the .exe isn't running in compatibility mode. So i'm guessing it may be something to do with my computer set up.

so far nothing i have tried has worked, running as adminstrator does nothing, compatibility mode, i'm not sure how that works.
Tenka Apr 11, 2017 @ 11:12am
Most EXE's dont have compatability mode by default. Maybe try enabling it?

Possibly setting it to Windows 7 or 8 maybe?

how do i do all that?
Tenka Apr 11, 2017 @ 11:27am
Hmm.. you have Win10 so I'm not sure. In Win7 you right-click the EXE file and click the compatability tab then select the drop down box for "Run this program in compatability mode for:" and select Windows 7 .. or Vista .. or some other older version.

I don't know how to do this in win 10 .. it might be similar or u could google it.

Spark is DirectDraw based game and DDraw is kind of screwed on newer OS, Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 especially.

However the fix I found is quite strange. Plugging a Direct Input based controller. I used a Logitech Rumblepad 2. Rahter odd, but it works, if anyone has an oldschool PC controller lying around, please try it.

I already had plugged an Xbox 360 controller, but would still get slowdowns. After I plugged the Logitech controller everything was 100% smooth. I already had this issue in the demo too and knew the fix beforehand. Was hoping this problem would've been fixed by now...
