Traps and spell cards that are a must have
What are some of the best trap and spell cards to have and how many of each should you have i feel it is better to invest in the best trap and spell cards and then build your decks around them i could be wrong.

You don't build a deck around the best traps and spells, you build the deck then see what staples will fit best

The game has a range of staples that decks can use, but every deck isn't gonna use the same staples, that's why you build your deck first then staples cause you don't know what you need until you built your deck or you can just build SHS and never use traps or spells

Without any deck consideration at all (heck i started with blue eyes and i now have 4 complete decks , with multiple variations , and one of them being meta (harpies)

Having 1 of , for quite a few spell or trap card , enables a lot of deck to be okay-ish in pvp ...

Book of moon , all forbidden spell cards , Cosmic cyclone or MST , lightning vortex .
Fiendish chain , shadow spell , treacherous traphole , Karma cut , wiretap ..

I think that having diversity on traps and spells is more important than having 3 of X staples that might or not get limited/banned!

Thats pretty much why I'm never bothered when staples get limited, I've got so many I could make a deck with just those cards alone.

As others said, kind of depends on the deck. Blue eyes likes having something like lightning vortex or raigeki break because then you can potentially gain advantage off the discard. Harpies would prefer traps or quick-play so they can proc slash harpie's effect and disrupt an opponent's plays. Hieratics want ballista squad to gain advantage off the tribute. Various decks want cosmic cyclone to trigger abilities that require losing some life points.

Other than that, cards like drowning mirror force and floodgate trap hole are just good stall cards for pretty much any deck and any situation. Slower or less consistent decks benefit from hand traps like sphere kuriboh or kiteroid, which although monsters they basically act as spells/traps. Solemn warning (from PVP SR tickets) is a situational card that can make or break the match in decks that do not use much backrow. Other than that, the whole line of "forbidden" spells are rather useful; they are quick-play spells with a "positive" and "negative" effect, but you can target your opponent's cards too. Their negative effects can also sometimes be turned into positives, so each of them basically has two potential uses for yourself or your opponent, providing a lot of versatility from a single card
