i've read a few references about assault mode decks, but what exactly are they, and are they F2P and budget friendly?

Assault Mode is anti F2P, you need more than 1 copy of the stuff in the structure deck in order to use a good Assault Mode deck

They're....."upgrades" to cards that currently exist. Basically you tag out the original monster and if the assault mode dies, the original floats back. The best Assault Mode is RDA Assault Mode in the King's Resonance EX SD, but its bad so I wouldn't bother. Is it f2p? Lol no.

Assault modes are monsters are basically evolved forms of certain synchro monsters. You basically need to get that Synchro monster on the field to then be able to use a "Assault Mode Activate" card to summon their Assault Mode from the deck. They're complerely f2p unfriendly as the card required to summon Assault Modes is currently locked behind the structure deck which requires money if you want a 2-3 copy. There will be a new box coming soon that adds tons of support for them and a different Assault Mode Activate card so you could at least make a working deck if you invest in that.
