With all due respect, if you haven't played the game since early 2000 then for all intents and purposes.... you are a complete noob, the entire format of the game has seen several major changes over the last 16 years (now I feel old...)
My point is, if you want to play this or any other Yu-Gi-Oh! Game going forward you are going to have to bite the bullet and learn as much about any deck as you can, complex or not as you have to remember, sure you may not want to use them, that doesn't mean you won't FACE them in which case you will still need to understand their mechanics and how they work to stand a chance.
It won't take that long to grasp if you just experiment and read a little.
