I'm not sure but from what i noticed, and I didnt see any cards on the field which negates play.
Sometimes if you set quickplay during mainphase you can't ativate it that turn or on battle. The card doesn't flash green. Sometimes against cpu I can play quick play spells from my hand. Sometimes I can chain quick play spell after opponent activates counter, othertimes not.

you cant use some quick-play spell in damage step thats why you might think this way.

Yeah same here. Specifically, it happens a lot with Half Shut. It works when it wants to but it works a lot more when I'm facing CPU opponents. When I'm in a ranked duel, it acts like it doesn't know how it works.

basicly to say is that the quick-plays spells or traps that modify atk can be used in any step of battle phase until damage calculation. enemy controller for example cant be used during damage step.

Ahhh, that makes sense. Alright, thank you

Some "Quick-play" spells can be played directly from your hand when you have 1 space empty in the magic/trap zone.

Even if the space is empty, sometimes I can't play it directly from my hand in response to attacks, it works with the cpu. (headlong rush for instance). Next time it happens I'll post the duel log or something.

You can NEVER EVER play cards from your hand during your opponents turn, thus you can't play quick-play spells from your hand to respond to attacks.

The way Quick-Play spells work sounds complicated at first, but it really is not.

Quick-Play spells do have a few unique rules though:

1. When you set them, they are treated the exact same as set traps, meaning you CAN NOT activate them the turn you set them. Don't believe anyone that say they can be activated the same turn you set them, because that is impossible.

2. When it's your turn, you can play them from your hand at any point it would be possible to activate the spell, even during the Battle Phase. Attack and Defense-modifying spells can even be played up to the Damage Step of a battle. If you find that you can not activate a Quick-Play for any reason, you do not fulfill the conditions to activate it or you're trying to activate it at a point you can not actually do so.

Keep this in mind, and you'll see that you won't run into any more issues with them.
