The Evil Within 1 is better
Big fan of the original despite the flaws. I got the platinum 4 times, and helped my friend with AKUMU for his platinum on the ps4. Message XplosivesXpert, ChristianR1927, and Realhorrorstory on PSN for proof since all you PC elitists think not owning the game on steam means you're lying about any points you make. I do own the first game on Steam.

Reason 1: The new artstyle. Color and vibrant instead of dark and gritty, not a single environment really gave you the creepy factor like the original did. Artstyle is not the same as graphics.

Reason 2: Disappointing bosses. The most unimaginative boss fights I have ever seen. Some of the bosses never even hit me due to their pathetic movesets. The ammo was plentiful and there was no reason to use any environmental traps. Just a few shotgun bullets and MAYBE explosive bolts would kill every boss. The Evil Within boss encounters always brought something new to the table and different types of bolts were actually useful in different boss fights.

Reason 3: Crafting system. Wtf happened to it? There was barely any point in actually using upgrades since they were so incremental. I mean you seriously had to upgrade a smoke bolt multiple times just to use the ability to sneak kill an enemy which was the entire point of the bolt in the first game. Everything else was so incremetal, like damage increasing 5% with every damage upgrade on a weapon and then having to use special parts to upgrade even further. The worst part is most of the game is easy so I barely even used the crossbow, which was the main gameplay mechanic of the first game, and when I dont use a huge mechanic like the crossbow it ruins the game. You can just craft ammo and kill whatever is in your way with a gun or sneak kill. (This might be why the upgrades are so much worse than the first, since the game is so much easier than the first that you might be overpowered with better upgrades)

Reason 4: Open world. Ah do I love open worlds. The most overused genre in the industry because if its open world, people will insta buy. The feeling of always missing something before moving onto the next chapter is the worst feeling. I spent 6-7 hours on chapter 3 sneaking around Union, always afraid to move onto the next chapter because who knows what I missed?
I mean who cares about Stefano, Theodore and Lily if its an open world. Sneaking around a town is far more interesting than saving my daughter, and worst part is nothing really even happens in Union apart from a couple nice side quests you get. Most of it is just finding the collectibles and parts which is boring because you expect after spending 6-7 hours on a chapter it was for a good reason but nope, the open world is just annoying and tedious and doesnt belong in a sequel to the Evil Within.

Reason 5: AI. They are dumb AF. You can lose an enemy by circling a car no joke. The more powerful ones like the Harbingers or Amina are a little harder to escape, but they still aren't very smart compared to the first game. With an open world you make sacrifices I suppose, in the things that actually count like gameplay and for the horror genre, atmosphere.

Reason 6: Modernized. Holy hell was this game made for the masses. Like Fallout 4, this game was dumbed down to appeal to everyone. Some parts worked, but a lot didn't. They basically flip flopped The Evil Within. They added the story and polish the first game missed (The story wasn't even bad, it just wasn't well told in dialogue), but made almost every other aspect that made the Evil Within great such as the difficulty, linear but open-ended levels, amazing bosses, the creepy atmosphere and artsyle, and the amazing pacing of the first game non-existent.

This game was a disappointment. An okay game that I could enjoy first time playing through, but a bad The Evil Within game. Would I play through it again? Probably. Just for the trophies and because I still love the series to death. (First game is my favorite game) Am I excited to replay the game? Not really. Would I recommend? No. Was it worth $60? No, but yes if it gets a third game in series. I still want to support the devs who made my favorite game.

Ty for reading or not. If you didn't read short conclusion is game is completely awful compared to the first game, but overall an ok game that I bothered to finish.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, no more burning bodies and no more timebombs/tripwires in the sequel!

I also enjoyed the 1st as of now. I'm only on chapter 6 tho, so it might change. Only thing that really gets me is the visual and voice change of the main characters.

I think you're missing a huge point about the game. It's NOT beacon. The whole idea is that something they thought perfect could become a neat little package of "tits up in horror" which is exactly what they nailed with union. Now could it have been a lot scarier. Yes. The modern houses don't feel the same as the burnt wooden medieval houses from the first game.

Do I still love this game? Yes.

I am surprised you didn't mention that they removed the hiding mechanic, but seeing as how things were stated, you probably never even had the thought in its mind. I'm only 13 chapters in. I personally am loving this to death, can't say it's perfect but it's great for me.

As for the boss fights, I've found myself out of ammo and supplies many times. It's even worse when a harbringer or guardian/amina/buzzsaw monster girl/whatever she's f-cking called hasn't had much of a dent made into their health. But then again I'm not some super amazing gamer who can nail every shot for a critical.

As for the story, I am LOVING it so far, it feels unique compared to the first game.

Also I use the crossbow a TON. Like it's my go to weapon.

Better or not, that just your oppinion. I love TEW2 better than TEW1.

The first half of the game wasn't too bad but overall there were some serious issues with TEW2's writing and pacing.

95% of the dialogue is completely unnecessary. The characters shouldn't be trying to explain every single thing, especially in a horror game. "He's trying to keep us out. That means he's afraid," is an actual line from the game. Also, all the characters felt pointless and the game's only interesting enemy was an optional one.

The second half of the game was particularly brutal with the pacing. It reminded me of Metroid Other M:

They should do a remaster of the first game using ID tech 6, with improved graphics , adjustable FOV & FPS limit. (e.g metro redux)

Imagine TEW 1 with good graphics like Doom 2016

Imo you can compare these games to the Kill Bill movies. While there is more amazing action in the first part, you get more story in the second one even tho im not entirely sure they didnt just made up some big story. But in the end i love both games. This series never was about scary horror but about ,abhorrent preposterous to nature ,grotesque design, pretty much like Silent Hill which i never found scary but grotesque. Usually i also dont like Open World. That was the reason i didnt like Breath of the Wild or Darksiders 2 or The Witcher. But in this game it felt pretty good, i actually liked it cause, i.e. the anima events were very well made. But thats just me. I hope people dont dislike The Evil Within 2 for the sole reason of it being not a The Evil Within 1.2 like in the Dark Souls series.

Bethesda could probably ask tango to make remastered versions of TEW 1 & 2 using ID tech 6, and sell it as a bundle. People would definitely buy. Gotta squeeze them monies.

So...ok? *goes back to playing*

Totaly agreed with the post, 1st one was 75% horror oriented, 25 % was action oriented but it was at the end of the game so you could live with that, the TEW 2 lack of horror locations and mainly focuses on open world which is more action oriented if you ask me, also the bosses are dissapointment very easy and not interested that for sure.
