Is the Nightmare Strat the same as EW1?
Focus on Crossbow upgrades to get fire harpoons?

My first playthrough is on Nightmare and I think the fire harpoons is very underwhelming in TEW2. So I went for the Explode Bolt and Smoke Bolt instead.
The fire bolts aren't not as strong as in the first game, where it killed (almost) every common enemy with one shot. I also focused on them in my first playthrough and then didn't use them very much. Using shock/smoke is the better option in my opinion.

Just get the corner take down.

Crossbow is useless in TEW2. Use corner stealth kill for roaming enemies (smoke bolts are good too but not necessary), upgrade handgun for bosses. Hangun has the best upgraded damage/crit

Traps are pretty good for groups.

Far from useless.
Especially on Classic. Smoke and Electricity bolts are must haves.

Thread is asking about Nightmare. I'm about halfway through my first Nightmare run and I can say I'm doing just fine committing to handgun upgrades.

The point he's getting is if he can use it on the hardest difficulty without upgrades it can be used on nightmare.

I found it to be eh to upgrade for the fire, but if you max out the damage on a crossbow bolt, then you can stealth knife the acid woman, and then do a quick hit with the bolt and boom, she is dead before she even screams. Easy to deal with. Pistol is far more worth it for upgrading. Easier to make the ammo and it is worth it more. Smoke bolts can be very effective, especially if you are fast with the stealth. You can easily take out 3-4 enemies with stealth when they are in the smoke. Explosive bolt is great for knocking 'em down and F-smashing their heads.

Obviously it can be used on any difficulty level, especially when ammo is difficult to find in the first place. Seems like a useless point to make and it really doesn't counter my point about fire harpoon bolts being useless compared to TEW1. In the first game completely upgraded harpoon bolts would one shot just about every enemy. This one it doesn't even one-shot most enemies even on survival difficulty.

Probably balance maybe I always found the harpoon more usefull for hitting weak spots more then anything.

I'd say focus on stealth and upgrade handgun and shotgun
Do mostly stealth kills to save ammo you will need it for the boss fights (or the gross crawling monsters) and if you need to fight try to shoot them in the leg with the harpoon to make them fall on the ground, run to them and press "F" to smash their heads. :D
Or if there are more just use the electric bolt (maybe try to level up that a little too) and smash them on the ground
Stealth is really worth it in this game especially on nightmare
