I personally hated it because the letterbox took up more of the screen then letterbox normally do.
Fair enough, IT takes up more than it normally would. I liked it because it hindered my ability to see. (which made it scarier for me, if that makes sense)
Very true. Letterbox was not 21:9 at all. Not even Close.
It creates a greater sense of apprehension when the game places threats beneath you constantly that you have to actively dedicate your attention to. Later on during the Laura fight you have objectives on the roof, traps on the floor and Laura constantly trying to kill you, having to divide attention between all three was more challenging and stressful than it would have been had the ability to see all three at once been available. You never know what Laura's up to so you feel harried the whole time. Removing them removes a huge element of that boss fight.
Framed things nice at times too.
People don't like control being taken from them though so I understand it not being for everyone and I know it's a lost cause so I'm not surprised it's gone.
On PC it's a different story...? Kinda, maybe? Letterbox on the first game helped with performance, disable that and the game ♥♥♥♥♥ the bed on modest hardware.
I'm guessing the sequel will be developed on id Tech 6 or UE4? Hopefully..
Understandable.. Which is one of the reasons why I do not buy Telltale games, but Games are an Art form and that Art should not be limited.
The letterboxes in The Evil Within made the game harder in a bad way.
Yes, When film makers want to achieve a letterbox on their videos they use Anamorphic lenses to stretch the shot their taking while their filming. When they fix the Stretched shot in a video editor the black bars come naturally.
The Evil Within did not do this, instead placing bars on a 16 by 9 ratio. They didnt do this by accident they wanted to limit your visibility.
I'm not saying black bars are better, and I understand how they may be silly. I played without them my first several playthroughs and then used the bars to see what it looked like and I never switched back because I kinda like them more. 1% actually like the bars lol. Its been fun reading other opinions about this.
