Any tips for fighting Vergil that ISN'T "use royal guard" ? Or am I screwed?
Heyo.

I'm uh, having a ton of trouble with Vergil once he gets to his SDT. It feels like I'm just ♥♥♥♥♥♥. I try to dodge, I can't ever fight back 'cause no matter what I do, I don't have enough for my own sin devil trigger, and then I eat ♥♥♥♥ and lose a buncha health. The first part of it, sure, no issues, but when he pulls that ♥♥♥♥ out, I'm screwed.

But also, like... It kinda seems like literally the only advice people have is "use royal guard". nothing else. no deeper explanations. no explanation on how. no anything.

I kinda... hate royal guard? I've always thought it was really boring, even since 3, and I never bothered to upgrade it, because, well, I like to have fun when I play video games, and all the other styles have been perfectly fine without me touching royal guard once throughout the entire game.

So... What do I do? Do I absolutely HAVE to learn royal guard? And if I do, how? Anyone got any advice or videos or anything? 'Cause it feels so unnatural to me. I just wanna run up on mfers. Not be a wuss and wait for them to come to me, y'know?

Anyway, it's the title. Any tips, or do I have to learn royal guard? and if I do, any advice?

Focus on keeping your distance from him. Although if you don't want to use Royal Guard, you can try Ice Age parrying, which is effective as well. I also think that you can avoid his attacks just by running around and jumping. Try to learn the mechanics of Vergil's attacks, it will allow you to better dodge and parry his hits.

Thanks a bunch for this!

trickster sword guns trickster sword guns trickster sword guns
Assuming first playthrough, you can dodge almost anything the game throws at you spamming Trickster so...just dodge. Seriously.

Trickster for dodging
Swordmaster for when you have a window for attack
I used only Dante Sword, Shotty and rockets

Learn his moves and combos and just dodge

He'll eventually gets out of his Devil Trigger form

And when he's at low health his attacks become less frequent just like in DMC3

Bro tires

Haven't fought him on SOS or DMD yet tho

Update, everyone, he is beaten :) and I did it without using royal guard! I guess I just got lucky. Or maybe I was too motivated to shut his prissy ass up.

But either way, thanks for the advice!

Time to necro this. And I think I can relate! I used to hate Royal Guard back in DMC3 but fell in love with it in DMC5.

Congrats on beating him!

You could rely on tricksters dodges. Perfectly timed jumps also give you I-frames. And that's the beauty of DMC.
You can play it in anyway you feel like, and usually works your way.

What was your strat?

...Necro? It hasn't even been a month!

Anyway, I just. Got motivated, I guess. I just kept using trickster constantly and SDT and... yeah? I dunno what to say, really. I don't think about tactics when I play DMC. I just become that one jerma clip.

Y'know, the one that's like:

I'm killing you. I'm killing you. I don't care about anything else, I don't give a ♥♥♥♥ about anything else, I- My programming is just "GET THAT ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ GUY RIGHT NOW". It doesn't- There's no, like, "Oh, he's running? Oh, back off a little!", it's just THUMP THUMP THUMP until I get you.
