Modding question.
Mods never worked for me in this game. I've tried multiple times. They just never did. I was told not to unzip the mods so I didn't. Fast forward to like a day ago, I was looking around file explorer and saw fluffy mod manager and just decided I would unzip the mods just for the hell of it. The mods worked after that... Have I just been fed misinformation? Or does it work both ways and it's just the "recommended" method didn't work for me? Also where are the mods stored in the game?

I never unzip mods, I just throw them into Fluffy Mod Manager. Although many mods don't work if you don't have RE Framework installed.
Impossible to tell without knowing what mods you're using, but 95% of mods for DMC5 do not need to be unzipped or extracted from their rar archives to work, but there are a scant few here and there that won't work unless you do this.

When it comes to mods that do work when still in their archives, you can do either one. If a mod works properly while in its archive, it should still work properly if you decide to extract it.

Again, most mods do not need to be extracted at all and work just fine when installed through Fluffy. I only ever extract them if they don't work.

The only mods I tried were coatless mods for the 4 playable characters. That's it. Do you have any idea why it didn't work until I unzipped them?
The only coatless mod I've tried is the one for Vergil, and it did indeed require me to unzip it for it to work. If those were the only mods you tried, then you may very well have tried the 5% of mods that require they be unzipped for whatever reason.

I use various other costume mods, mainly for Dante, and none of them require this, but it looks like you got lucky. Or unlucky, as the case may be.

This isn't quite true. SSSiyan's Collab Cheat Trainer and the Co-op Trainer do require RE Framework, and those are probably the most important mods out there for the game. Plus, REFramework is just a great thing to have installed anyway. But there are no cosmetic mods that require REFramework, especially not the coatless model swaps OP was talking about. A vast majority of mods for DMC5 don't require REF.

Well, there's a cosmetic mod that I had to have RE Framework installed for, and it's called "Clean Vergil over beaten", because it didn't work for me without it~ I also didn't write that coatless model swaps need it, I meant more in general. Assuming that the mod I mentioned above didn't work for me there can be some mods which also might not work without RE Framework, so maybe I put it wrong that many of them "don't work", some "may not work" would probably be a better term, but thank you for the correction, maybe I will check more mods one day)
