Understanding the Story

Do I need to have played the other games to understand the story of this one? asking because I'm conflicted whether or not I should buy and play the other games before playing this one. (Or is there any story at all lmao)

devil may cry is deeper than you think , and I personally believe that to experience DMC5 to it's fullest, you need to play the ones prior to it (ofcourse, except 2 and DmC: Devil May Cry but real gamers don't skip them)

the order is 3>1>2>4>5 in terms of the story chronologically

Story summary from DMC 5 is enough to understand what's going on. DMC 3 is the only one with a really good story. DMC 5's story is just a lot of fan service and a conclusion to the series potentially.

Also if you play other DMC games. Don't play DMC 2. Just pretend it doesn't exist. It's horrible and contributes absolutely nothing to the series outside of the extended universe.

It would be better to play the previous games first but you won't be missing out totally if you just play 5.

better to watch cutscenes of previous games. Its not like 3 or any other have some special mechanics. Gameplaywise just play 5, need story? -watch cutscenes of 3-1-2-4 and then play 5

just play all of them honestly. all of the DMC games are very good, DMC 2 was ok but still play it if you get into the series. You'll become more attached to the characters if you just play through it rather than watching cutscenes. Just dont play the game that just says DMC with the kid with the short hair cut. That game is an abomination.

DMC 5 hold very well by itself, having wider knowledge of the story would make you enjoy the characters more, but is not necessary.
I would even recommend to anyone interrested in the DMC franchise to start with the 5 and if you enjoyed your time to discover the previous game.

Better to play than instead of youtube it. Get dmc hd collection. Play 3, 1 and 2(skip 2. It sucks) then play 4. Devil may cry:DMC isn't canon to the actual story. It's a reboot from a different game studio. Not bad game at all, just isn't Dante and vergil. Then replay 5
