Gameplay wise, he's not too different in 5 than he was in 4, aside from a new combo and the Devil Breaker mechanic with the bionic arms that do different abilities. But those minor changes are very noticeable when you try to go back.
Plus, you can Exceed and even MAX-act his air taunt, which is OPAF
This game he comes into his own more and is more personally involved with the story.
That said I actually do enjoy playing Nero and suspect that from a meta-POV V is going to drop off a bit in the higher difficulties. I also find it narratively interesting that; regardless of whether you prefer to play Dante or not, Dante is objectively THE most powerful character in first playthrough thanks to his devil trigger monopoly.
That said Nero REALLY needed to get over his obsession with Dante calling him "dead weight." I mean for ♥♥♥♥♥ sake by the time the main game has begun its been over a month.
Here, while I feel there are more parts where dialogue writing is eh, there are also scenes that show him off a bit more as his own character, as well as running commentary during missions and boss fights. IMHO, he comes off as more human in his character interactions, despite his super duper -ness, and that adds to him.
Nero earned his place, fun to play... so many diverse combos with the devil breakers which add so much variety to him with only 1 weapon and a gun. His taunts are nice and cool guys dont look at explosions :)
We expected to be playing as the previously established main character, not a whiny emo femboy crybaby.
I have nothing against whiny emo femboy crybabies, but when literally *all* of the pre-release footage *and* the demo disc had Solid Snake as the playable character, it made it a bit hard not to feel like I had just been directly lied to.
As for why I like Nero more now?
Two words.
ROCKET.
PUNCH.
