Mission 10 - No Spoilers - How did Dante get the Balrog?
Is it ever explained or shown how Dante get the Balrog weapon?
As in letting you fight the Balrog demon?

Balrog is an ancient nearly divine being from Tolkien lore. Associated with Fire. Pretty much an ancient "demon".

During one of the press demos, in the Void, Matt Walker talked about the Balrog:
"This weapon is called Balrog" *fans cheer in excited*.
"We never had/showed a Balrog Demon before in Devil May Cry".
I'm also pretty sure he said "we are excited to show you/for you to find out".
He strongly suggested that the game will have a Balrog Demon Boss that you fight for the weapon.
I was sure this will be it, but then started most in 10 with the Wesson's already unlocked. Unexplained too.

A bit disappointed of they don't let you fight a freaking Balrog with Dante

Read the novel, Dante met up with someone from DMC 2, then fight balrog

That's very disappointing. Sucks tbh. I was
REALLY looking forward to battle a Balrog in DMC5. How epic is that?
Matt Walker and Itsuno heavily implied it's a boss in the game and even hyped about it! (During a live conference)

Can't believe they chose to reserve it to a novel a small minority would read.
What a missed opportunity :(

The weapon is cool, it even speaks to Dante. So you'd think it would be a cool moment like Agni and Rudra or something.
There was a scene in one of the trailers with an explosion of fire from a long corridor- I was sure that's a Balrog.

How can one find and read the novel? Is it worth it? How long is it?

Also can you even read the novels without giving yourself spoilers about the characters and events/reveals in DMC5?

Because I started reading the summary in Wikipedia about the 5th novel and it sounds like it's going to have spoilers. Dunno if I could read further

That's Beowulf.

Am I the only one who seriously thought for sure we are going to be fighting a huge Balrog Demon Boss with Dante - got excited - and deeply disappointed that we don't?

You mean Beowulf and no, Vergil slaughters him and gets them until like half way through the game then he literally throws them to Dante.

Yeah I also feel disappointed, most of the novel could have made it in the game. Hopefully DLC
Shotgundam009 Mar 16, 2019 @ 8:04am
Balrog doesn't have a crossup so Dante just keep'd him in the corner.

Some speculate that the Urizen fight is a reworked Balrog because they ran out of time. He's using kick and punch moves there.

Quote from the translation:
"Balrog seems to be enjoying himself and doesn’t even get angry when Dante dodges his attacks."

Sounds like such a cool and unique boss fight and script for cutscenes.
In the end he decides to stop fighting and gives himself to Dante as a weapon.
Balrog even speaks to Dante in the novel in weapon form and in-game as well!
How cool is that ?
It could have been eally fun fight to watch and play with them bantering, agitating each other and just having fun fighting. Until you win and Balrog submits of his own free will.

I agree. If Balrog really was the type of demon to banter and enjoy the fight, then it'd be a refreshing change (compared to just about every other demon boss, in which they're super serious and don't quip with Dante/Nero).

In an interview months before the release they confirmed that there wont be a Balrog boss battle. Do you have a link to that conference where they are heavily implying it?

It was a video showing Dante's new weapons and moves (before release - a bit after Dante's trailer) - in the Void. Seeing a bit of Cerberus, Rebellion, E&I, Coyote.A, Cavalier and Balrog.
They really kinda teased it :
"We never had/shown a Balrog Demon before in DMC" and the way it was pronounced and phrased with the crowd reaction - was almost unmistakable "We have a new Balrog boss for you".

I can look it up, but I rather avoid YouTube as much as possible until I finish the game. Because freaking spoilers are everywhere.

Exactly. Would be very refreshing and surprising too. You'd expect a serious wrathful Demon - but instead get one that's excited and thrilled to fight someone as challenging as Dante. Testing his limits. With almost a Dante like personality. Could have been awesome, funny and memorable boss moment in the series.
Such a great boss idea Capcom, you already made a brand new weapon - why contain it in some book?
