Newcomer, which DMC game I should play first?
I know the series is of course focused on gameplay and not story, but i'm interested in getting into the story and characters of the series before playing DMC5.

Which should I play first? DMC1 or 3?

The story progresses like so: DMC3 -> DMC1 -> DMC4 -> DMC2 - DMC5.

Start with 3.

And ignore 2, it's a total waste of time and it barely fits in the story at all.

It's enough if you play 4, but if you really want to know everything, then 3 (which is prequel to 1) and after that 4 (same), it will fill you on everything you need to know. Then maybe 1st game to get the deal about V creatures.

So I should play DMC3 first, and then 1, 4 and 5 (I know 2 is considered bad so I don't think I will play it)?

play by release order

Sorry for being a stingy butt but DMC2 has been confirmed to be before DMC4 now.

Yes, it should be fine for you in order to get into the story, but I want to clear out some comments above

Original timeline was:

Now, after DMC5 came out:

If you want not only get into the lore, but actually enjoy gameplay too, then it's better to

yup if you want to play them in order start with 3 - 1 - 4 - 5

Edit: IMO the story is pretty worth it, it's quite entertaining, so get into it

1, 3, 4 is probably the best way honestly. Don't worry about the chronological order. Playing DMC 1 after DMC 3 will make DMC 1 feel clunky, better go the other way around.
play them in release order, skipping 2 because 2 is garbage

1 then 3
If you are new to DMC I wouldn't suggest 3 because its high difficulty can be a little bit discourage, you can start with 4 then follow up with 1 or 3 on your choice.

Thanks for all the replys, I will try DMC1 first, I just hope it aged well enough.

3 is a must. 4 is obviously important because it introduces Nero and all that stuff but I think 3 is more important for playing 5. I don't want to spoil certain parts of both games, but 5 is filled with throwbacks to 3 both in story moments and gameplay. Several beats are meant to evoke nostalgia for 3. 5 feels like a big fan service for fans of DMC3. You even fight bosses that are related to things in DMC3. The core emotional element of the series is also introduced in this game, which is vital for the plot of 5.

My opinion on what's essential for the full enjoyment of 5 is: play 3 and 4. They're both absolutely worth it. You can play 1 if you want, but you can also just read about it and you're covered. As long as you know about Dante, Vergil, Trish and Mundus/Sparda, playing 1 is unnecessary. The game didn't age well in my opinion. Ignore 2 completely.

I replay it regularly, and it's aged well enough if you just expect it to be what it is. It's the starting point before the refinement that came with 3. The feeling and and excitement is there, it's just really rough around the edges.
