Can I play this without playing other DMC's?

I've never played a DMC game before, but want to try DMC5 because it's getting great reviews. Can I skip all the other DMC and still understand what is going on in DMC5? Is there any previous DMC's that are a MUST PLAY before playing DMC5?

I don't really see why not. There's a "History of DMC" section so you probably won't be totally lost.

Yes definitely not necessary to play the previous games.
Thats coming from a DMC fan who played all previous games.
Whether or not you enjoy the game will come down to if you like the "heavy metal over the top bloody" DMC style or not.

Not really, unless you wanna get an idea of how the franchise has changed over the years you can just watch the "History of DMC" video FurryFrikker mention and you're good to go.

Even wihtout watching it you'd be good to go really, the story does explain what may need explaining for it to work as a self contained story.
