So Vergil's death from Devil May Cry 1 got retconned?
We all know from DMC1 that Dante fought Nelo Angelo multiple times and the 3rd fight between them revealed Nelo Angelo to be Vergil under the influence of Mundus. After Dante defeated Vergil he exploded revealing the other piece of the amulet and Dante realising that it was his brother which deeply saddened him and gave him the anger and motivation he needed to fight Mundus. So all those important story got retconned?

We never really saw him "die", as the camera focused on Dante until all the flashing stopped.

As always the rule of no body = not dead applies XD.

Vergil is a fan favourite you would think that they were just going to let him die?

The first Devil May Cry was basically made by a different team, with Hideki Kamiya as director. In the original version of events, yeah, Vergil is supposed to die after the third fight with Dante, giving Dante motivation as you said. Kamiya himself has confirmed as much.

But when Itsuno took over and gave Vergil more backstory, it seems he had a different interpretation. So if you look at DMC1 in a vacuum, yeah, Vergil died. If you take Itsuno's canon into account, then it's more like Vergil was "released" from the mind control after being beaten so badly by Dante, and presumably the flash of light we see is him being thrust back into the demon world or something.

He was only "mostly dead".
In DMC 3- Vergil was defeated by Dante- He jumped off the edge into the underworld. That's where he sees mundus: the demon king. He killed their mother and trapped Sparta (their father) in prison. Where is he is trapped in a endless loop of pain. Vergil failed to fight Mundus. After that- Mundus put vergil soul into the Nelo Angelo. Thus sending him to kill Dante in DMC1. With all his memories gone.

Dante fought him. Before Vergil (Black angel). Could kill him. Dante amulet that was given to them by their mother: was shown to Vergil. Thus Vergil started to remember. Later on, they meet again and Vergil took on a new form. Dante defeated him at the end. He was free from the nelo angelo armor. Once Dante defeated him.

*Nelo angelo's are a copy of the legendary knight "Black angel".* They are basically soulless puppets.

I don't know what happened to Vergil's sword. But in DMC 4- his sword was broken. Nero was dying and basically went into rage and the sword was put back together. Nero SPOILER! Nero is Vergil's son, have no idea who is the mother Vergil's sword is used to open portals. They wanted it in DMC4 to open all the hell gates. and .................

Well in 5! More spoilers if you haven't played it yet Vergil comes back, about to die because he lost his powers. So he rips off Nero's Devil bringer arm to get his sword back. That's all I have to say.

If you want to know why he was EVIL. Devil May Cry: DMC. He wanted to take Mundus throne and role over the humans as their "Test subjects". SO dante kicked his ass and used his sword to teleport. DIEs and the demons used his inner rage to turn him evil.

DmC: Devil May Cry doesn't really count in this case though. In the original series, it's hinted heavily that Vergil craves power because he couldn't protect his mother from dying at the hands of Mundus' minions.

I forgot about that: He lust for more power. After 5 he becomes like the anti-hero if you see him just chilling in the van during the menu screen :)
