So DMC anime is canon the games?
It seems that it is, so how is Morrison black? In the anime he is clearly white.
Idk about the previous games, haven't played them yet, so no spoilers please

How do you expect people to learn when the logic behind the things you say is faulty?

No, the anime is not canonical, never was, never will be.
If any part of something is contrary to the main canon (DMC games), then in this part we prefer the main canon. It works this way because the main canon can change.

Images of characters from the anime are present in the history of DMC 5.
There is no image of Morrison from the anime.

We can infer:
Morrison's anime image is not canon.
The anime's main events are canon.

In any case, to make most of the anime non-canon, Capcom will have to release a game based on the events of the anime.

It's your word against developers word lmao. Who do you think we'll trust? You, casual dmc fan or people who make these games and write its stories?

Tbh, my vote is neither. They're the studio that decided that DMC2 now comes before DMC4. They just change their minds on the fly, with characters that act out of character (eg. DMC4 and DMC5 Dante).

The only canon that matters is the one in your head. If it makes sense for you, then you've won.
It's funny seeing someone say it's not canon because Morrison is black... And that patty's age changed... It's been a VERY long time since the anime, since it's between DMC 2 and 4 (It was between DMC 1 and 4 before they changed things up.) So all of the novels and manga are canon, but some things changed, like in the Tony Redgrave one, saying that Gilver was Vergil, but it's actually a copy that Mundus made with information about Sparda and his son's combat style.

I was clueless about changes back then. I watched the anime after playing DMC 5 and was confused a bit, cause I was told beforehand that the anime is canon.
Canon but they can be selective with it. Morrison is an anime character that they changed to be black, Patty was brought back as a freshly turned 18 year old. They could redo the Sparda disciples story in 6 for example and make their anime appearances non-canon.

No, the anime is not canonical, never was, never will be. In fact, none of the outside material is canonical, all the novels, manga, anime, and yes, spinoff/portable games, are not canonical.

In the anime's case the main reason why it's not canonical now is because they made Morrison a black man. Secondary reason is they changed Patty's age, so it no longer fits the timeline.

The only canon that matters is the main five games and DMC3 Special Edition. As for everything else, the only information/lore from outside sources only fit the canon as long as they obey the following rules:

1 - They don't contradict any major plot points or the timeline of the games.
2 - They add information and lore to the world building in a meaningful way.
3 - They inform the characters in a meaningful way.
4 - They were written or stated by a member of staff that worked on the games (e.g. Hideki Kamiya, Hideaki Itsuno, Bingo Morihashi, Hiroyuki Kobayashi, etc.)
3 - They were written or stated by someone who worked closely with an original creator 5basically just Shin-ya Goikeda, writer of the first two novels).

To expand on these rules, and to make a specific example out of the very first novel, the story is not canonical because it does not fit the timeline of the games anymore. The DMC1 novel was written as a story that takes place prior to the events of the game, so it establishes a lot about Dante's character, history, and personality, it explains how he got his guns, it explains how he makes and spends money, it shows how he treats normal people, etc. In the novel, Dante does not start out with his iconic Ebony & Ivory handguns. He gets them halfway through the story from Neil Goldstein, who is still a canonical character because Nico is her granddaughter and even points at her portrait literally on one of Dante's guns. This means despite the fact the main story of the novel is not canonical, Neil's character still is. The fact that Dante got his guns from her still fits the canon of the games, just not when and where, because as that event is told in the story of the novel, it doesn't fit the timeline of events, and she is also related to the reason why the engraving on his guns say "Art Warks" and not "Art Works." The typo isn't a mistake done by a developer. "Art Warks" is the name of Neil Goldstein's gunsmithing business, she has a sign with the exact same typo on the front of her shop. Why does it have a typo? Because her young grandson made the sign, and there's an important reason for Neil's character to have never fixed the typo.

Another specific example that's included in the novel is the fact that Dante loves strawberry sundaes. Not only is this shown in the anime, it's also shown in DMC5 with a photograph of him eating one. This is and always has been part of Dante's character right from the very beginning.

So. For those of you that would say "making Morrison black doesn't mean the anime isn't canon!" let me point at rules 1, 2, and 3. Morrison is a major character in the anime. He is one of, if not the main contact for getting jobs for Dante, meaning he's one of Dante's closest acquaintances, making him an important character to the plot and series of events.

Now, let's look at this realistically. White people and black people are not the same. SHOCKING revelation, I know. Now that Morrison is a black man, that means he comes from a family of black people, grew up black, was raised black, was treated like a black person (and that includes both positive and negative treatment). You can't just grab the color fill tool and turn a character black and assume everything in their life stayed the same, that's grossly ignorant of how the world works.

So, to explain rules 1, 2, and 3 in this situation:
- Morrison in the anime is caucasian, so it contradicts the game.
- A character's race, ethnicity, and background are extremely meaningful factors that inform the character and their place in the world they exist in.

imagine being so confidently wrong. Also they didnt chnage patties age thats how much time has passed you goober. Itsuno has stated that literally everything is canon except the dmc Canadian comics , and ima trust him over some random dude on steam. Dmc has been retconned a billion times why does a few more make something not canon? The original timeline was 3,1,4,2 but they retconned it to 3,1,2,4,5 with the release of 5 , that doesnt make the 2nd game non canon cause they fudged some timelines. Again the series creator and creative director says its all canon so ima trust him. Lots of things get retconned cause the series was made on the "dont think about it: mentality but people just wanted more , hence the novels/mangas/show. Sorry to ruin your little head canon
also gotta love the fact you invented your own little rules on whats canon and not lmaooooooo , didnt know we had a capcom exec in chat
