I used to go with a standard Xbox360 wired controller, but after going through several of these due to the bumpers starting to malfunction, I switched to my old WiiU pro controller (with adapter), which has more durable buttons and to this day still works great.

I've also tried ps4 controller and it's pretty good too.

Xbox 360 controllers aren't built for action games, just not built for back button presses and buffers(holding the button down for long periods). Although it is very good for stuff like Dark Souls and Nioh. Plus they aren't manufactured any more so they aren't easy to get hold of. The analog went on my old one which is another problem those controllers had.

Xbox one controllers are complete garbage, Buttons don't register well especially the face buttons and the bumpers are made of cheap flimsy plastic that's prone to breaking.

Dualshock 4 is extremely well built, buttons are all responsive. Bumpers are nice and durable. Can't really say anything bad about it apart from the the fact that I hate the touch pad.

Dualsense is really nice, controller is much bulkier and has a better design and layout than the ds4. What really lets it down though is that I find the buttons really stiff which makes it harder to royal guard among other things.

Personally I plug in a dualshock 2 when I'm playing as Dante, I use the dualsense for vergil. If I had to choose just one though I'd probably go with the DS4.

My first like 3 hours I played with a 3rd party PS3 controller, which was fine, but the controller would freeze everytime I alt-tabbed. Switched to an Xbone controller and haven't switched since.

I play on PS5 controller, works fine. I installed a mod, so the interface shows PS buttons.
I use the Switch controller like a mad man. Gotta be extra delicate and precise with the style switching on this D-pad...

Surprisingly I've had basically the exact opposite experience. Ive had far more issues with explicitly dualshock 4's in terms of reliability under stress and especially when you take into account things like the environment (I have a bunch of old ds4's that all have sweaty/sticky thumbsticks, right next to a bunch of other controllers that have also been lying there with no issue). Xb1 controllers I have had issues with like 1 bumper failing immediately, but other than that its nothing that other controllers also don't have issues with. That said, the elite series 2 controller is garbage, and I think some of the issues carry over to newer xb1 controllers (haven't purchased any new stock ones).

Aside from that, one thing to note is that ds4's generally have a softer button feel especially with the dpad. Triggers/bumpers do not wrap around as much. Some people might like clickier/softer buttons. Ds4 lets you claw grip which is nice for some games like dmc (at the cost of comfort...). xbox pads let you reach thumb over to dpad which is really nice for some games like dark souls etc. where you don't have to claw grip and still move around while using menus (super niche though).

The switch pro controllers are pretty nice, more clicky and asymmetrical like xbox pads, haven't heard much about issues with them and I have had no issues with mine but ive only owned one so far.

Id say that the best controller I could recommend for dmcv is specifically the xbox elite series 1 controller, NOT the series 2, which is tough to do now. The series 1 elite controller is really nice for a ton of games because of the 4 paddles (can also look at third party controllers for things like this). Perfect for dmcv especially dante, as it lets you keep a normal grip and have dedicated fingers for each style.

However I recently bought a series 2 controller to see what its like, and the deadzone was immediately ♥♥♥♥♥♥, it has no tension around the centre and almost drifts freely out of the deadzone, it 100% flicks to the other side when you let go of the stick, lots of face button issues (not inputting when it bottoms out, need more pressure etc.). I have gotten 8 or so replacements by now and they are all the same out of the box.

Overall I'd say take your pick of what you want. Asymmetrical or symmetrical? Clicky/soft? If you can afford it, getting a controller with atleast 4 extra paddles underneath is a godsend for playing Dante.

Dualshock 4 with official Back Button attachment. You can style like crazy like that.
