God Hand (PS2) is a classic action title in the same spirit as DMC. But be warned, it's janky and unpolished and based.

God Hand babyyyyyyy

An off-beat suggestion is Valdis Story: Abyssal City. Main gameplay is Metroidvania, side scrolling 2D exploration. The combat is a very combo heavy system similar to DMC. Lots of juggles and special attacks.

Assuming Wonderful 101 does well enough on Steam for PlatinumGames to set aside their negative opinions towards PC gaming temporarily, it might be worth looking into Babylon's Fall. Even so, you're probably gonna have to chuck dosh at Sol Cresta just to tell PlatinumGames to keep making PC games.

Wait, does PG really have something against PC? Funny, because almost all of their ports have the exact same frame limiter issue.

Well, it's more that most Japanese game developers have this expectation where fans of ANY of their franchises will like ALL of them, just because the consumer chose to game on PC. PlatinumGames has stated that they wanted to put as many of their games on PC as humanly possible, though their recent focus on console-only titles gives off the impression that they were full of ♥♥♥♥ during that interview with PC gamer.

With that in mind, it's probably in our best interests to treat Sol Cresta and Babylon's Fall as petitions for future ports.

Ah, that does sorta make sense. It's a real shame too, because quality action titles were in such short supply for such a long time, and now that they're finally making a comeback some key ones are locked to one platform.

Oh, I can't believe I didn't mention this: ULTRAKILL. What if DMC were a first-person shooter. It's got a style meter, enemy stepping, double jumping, air dashing, wall jumping, and a strong list of weapons and weapon mods to choose from.
It has overwhelmingly good reviews, but is this still the best style-action game? I am always up for high challenges.

Here's my list of recommendations

Ninja Gaiden Black / 2 : The original DMC-like game, chaotic/hard/violent
Bayonetta : The spiritual successor before DMC 5 released, very similar to DMC
Metal Gear Rising : Good game overall with some tight combat and great music

Kingdom Hearts 2 : Pretty much the best example of DMC but it's an ARPG; off-putting story
Nier Replicant / Automata : Similar to KH2 being an ARPG but with a better story yet simpler combat
The Wonderful 101 : Extremely underrated but very fun when you start to get it

Nightmare Before Christmas PS2 : Yea, really.
God of War : Kinda mashy and doesn't take much skill and combo learning but still
Vanquish : DMC but it's a 3rd Person Shooter, takes time to learn but is very rewarding
Thanks for the recs. I'm adding MGRR, The Wonderful 101: Remastered, Vanquish, and Assault Spy to my wishlist. Can you tell me if these games demand a high level of skill from players? Also, should I get DMC5 if I am looking for a high-skill ceiling action game?

If you want a high-skill ceiling action game, Ghostrunner exists.

Gave me a bit of whiplash necro'ing this thread.

Dunno if I'd list DMC5 as the best style action game ever, but it's up there.
Of all the games listed there, the Ninja Gaiden games are without a doubt the most difficult. Ninja Gaiden's difficulty makes DMC's look like a walk in the park, with the exception of perhaps DMC3, where enemies actually have aggression. Only downside here is that playing the best versions, Black for NG1 and original 2 for NG2, is kind of pain in the ass. If you have a modern Xbox you can play them there, if not they run great on the Xemu and Xenia emulators respectively.

NG Master Collection is fine, Sigma 1 (a remaster/rebalanced version of Black) is fine, not as good as Black, Sigma 2 is radically different and if you go this route, best install a mod that attempts to restore it as best it can to being close to the original 2.
ff16 but dont buy it unless u have nasa pc

Personally I would keep my eyes on Tides of Annihilation. The combat seems very dmc like.

There's not really anything quite like it which is why it's so beloved. If the high skill ceiling of Dante appeals to you, then Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black and Ninja Gaiden 3 Razors Edge are great - but you wont be doing many combos in that, it's more hardcore but allows for player expression ala DMC. Other than that, there's Hi-Fi Rush and if you enjoy FPS games, Mullet Mad Jack and Severed Steel adopted DMCs style system for their combat to an extent.

Anyone who recommends a Platinum game to you is doing you a disservice; they're fine, perfectly serviceable action games, but if you play Bayonetta then you've played the rest: Nier Automata reuses Bayo's moves a lot, and Metal Gear Rising does the same. Platinum's titles feel very by-the-numbers and lacking depth compared to DMC and NG.

You could also play the PS2 Era God of War games through various means. There was also a movie tie-in Ghost Rider game on the PS2 that tried to be a DMC3 clone.

Of all of them though, I would say Ninja Gaiden 2 and Devil May Cry 4SE have the highest skill ceilings in the genre: Dante is insanely hard to be an amazing player with, for many of us it took years, but it's very rewarding. 5 has a slightly lower skill ceiling due to quality of life features, but it's still rewarding if you seek that feeling of mastery.

People who recommend Final Fantasy 16 haven't played DMC beyond a surface-level. I got FF16 believing the marketing of "It's final fantasy with DMC combat!" but it plays nothing like DMC beyond having a lock-on and a very poor version of the stinger move.

I've been seeing a lot of mixed opinions on which version of the NG recommendations to choose. Since I'm using a PC, if I decide to buy the Master Collection and NG 2 Black on Steam, will I be getting the best versions of each game?
OR
Should I save and play them on emulators for a better experience?

Thanks, gonna check them. I reckon these 3 offer more challenge than Platinum games.

Then, I'm going to check 4SE as well. But I guess I'll have to start from DMC3SE for its difficulty and the story build-up.

Just realised Devil May Cry HD Collection exists on Steam. Should I get it to have a feel for DMC3SE's difficulty? I read that the chronological order of the series is 3, 1, 2, 4, 5
So I'd start the series with 3SE.

Thanks! Sadly, the sequel seems not to have made it from the reviews.

Ninja Gaiden Black and Ninja Gaiden II run great on the Xemu and Xenia emulators respectively. Xemu is pretty straightforward to setup but for Xenia I recommend following Guilty Gaming's setup guide for playing NGII on Xenia.

If you're going to play through the whole DMC series, I'd recommend doing release order, not chronological order. 1 is also a pretty challenging game and the series builds up on its mechanics as you go. But yes DMC3:SE in the HD Collection is a good time.
