DMC 3, 4, 5, created under the direction of Hideaki Itsuno match Dante's original personality.
Even the anime series is more in line with Dante's original personality than DMC 2.
Hideaki Itsuno joined the DMC 2 development team late in development and had no time to fix anything.
Anyway, thats pretty much the only guess I have in regards to Dante going from goofy-cool character in 3 into some Vincent Valantine character we see in DMC2.
