Hold Attack?
First DMC and I am really starting to feel my fingers hurt at the first missions, especially when playing as V.

Is there a way to make it so that holding the attack buttons for the pets makes them continue attacking instead of having to button mash two buttons endlessly? It seriously hurts during boss fights, if there's no way to I don't think I'll ever play as V when given the choice even though I kind of like his playstyle.

It hurts? what? Dumb question, you using mouse and keyboard or a controller?

Controller. And yeah mashing your thumb between X and Y 100 times in a row does hurt, who made these controls?

The issue is that characters execute different attack combos depending on the sequence of your attack inputs, which just holding attack wouldn't allow for.
This isn't actually that much of an issue for V because you can use your DT+X/Y to empower your pets and have them attack on their own, no inputs required. Then you can just charge your DT bar by reading his book (enemies need to be in Vs vicinity for this to work) and continue until you can go in to finish them off with your cane.

Rebind Griffon to LB, rebind Shadow to square/X, put Nightmare on triangle/Y

Never play with default controls

It's been a while since I used V, but I'm pretty sure both Griffon and Shadow have skills that require holding their respective buttons down, so that wouldn't be an option unfortunately; plus they have different combos based on when you tap their respective buttons and such. That being said, as another poster previously said, you can empower one or both of them with your DT gauge to not only power them up but act on their own for a brief time, which can greatly help you play V more comfortably and effectively.

I pretty much exclusively play with the default controls (aside from changing Nero's a smidge to make it more consistent with everyone else's and how he worked in DMC4) and I couldn't play these games any other way; I understand that it may not be the most optimal way to play, but I wouldn't be able to really reprogram almost 2 decades of muscle memory even if I wanted to. Of course, that's also an option for those that find the default control scheme uncomfortable.

Eventually you'll learn to do the claw.
