This isn't actually that much of an issue for V because you can use your DT+X/Y to empower your pets and have them attack on their own, no inputs required. Then you can just charge your DT bar by reading his book (enemies need to be in Vs vicinity for this to work) and continue until you can go in to finish them off with your cane.
Never play with default controls
I pretty much exclusively play with the default controls (aside from changing Nero's a smidge to make it more consistent with everyone else's and how he worked in DMC4) and I couldn't play these games any other way; I understand that it may not be the most optimal way to play, but I wouldn't be able to really reprogram almost 2 decades of muscle memory even if I wanted to. Of course, that's also an option for those that find the default control scheme uncomfortable.
