skip 1 and 2. and DmC.
1 is a good game and still relevant to the story. The reason I told him to skip 2 is because it's a bad game and means almost nothing to the story.
If you are going to play every game in the series, i would say play them in order.
If you are only going to play one, and then see if you want to play more, then i would recommend 5 first, then choosing based on whichever's trailer appeals to you the most.
dmc5 is imo the easiest to get into, and its also not as difficult as dmc3, though you are probably gonna have problems understanding the story, altough there is a recap of what happened so far.
dmc3 is relatively welcoming too, since it doesnt bash you over the head with multiple characters and stuff like style-switching, but as a game its definitely harder than 5. it also serves as a prequel to the entire series, so if you still kinda care about story, this could make sense too.
though be warned if you decide to play dmc3 first, you should definitely get the hd collection (contains dmc 1, 2 and 3) instead of the standalone version of dmc3, since the standalone is a buggy, laggy mess for a lot of players.
skip 2 and 4.
1 is its own game and definitely worth checking out
3,4,5 are all worth it. Best to play these games in release order
You could also try DmC. It's not relevant anymore, but hey, maybe you vibe with it, and reboot Vergil is actually a pretty fun character to play as, but that's a conversation most aren't ready to have yet, because they still think that V is a good action game character.
