Tips for closing distance
I am not a veteran of the series but I really like the game. I just often feel like I wiff way too many attacks after an enemy gets knocked back even slightly or I dodge and attack and the same happens etc. I mean nero has the grappling hook but even that does not work everytime and the dash attacks just knock the enemy back again. Do you guys just unlock and run to the nearest enemy or is there some ability that works well for this? I have not finished the game but have already played with Dante. I might add that I play this game on ps4.

Let go of lock on and use your guns to keep the combo up while you close down on the enemy.

If you're having trouble closing as Dante check his trickster style. It's all about field movement.

As Nero it's as you said just use his grab whenever you send anyone flying accidentally. Upgrade the grade for max range if you keep having problems with it.

I don't think V has any problems about this lol.

As dante you teleport with trickster. It has pretty much the overall range from neros grapple. Only that dante has 2 different teleport abilities. Upgrade and check the trickster moves.

For Nero you can close any distance with the following combo: jump->Calibur->Payline (keep holding Y to charge for Hard Way. By the time you reach the ground it should be fully charged)->Hard Way
Dante can use Sky Star->Air Trick. For greater distances you can use multiple Sky Stars/Air Tricks with DT.

Most of the time I just disengage lock on and just walk up to enemies otherwise for each character its a bit different. For Nero I tend to use moves that close in on the distance like (ex)calibur and (ex)streak if I don't remove lock on. The exceed versions sure cover a lot of distance. For Dante it's all about Trickster style to close in on the distance. V, well lets just say it doesn't matter since you can pretty much have Griffon and Shadow attack automatically if you manage your DT gauge.

Sounds like you're spamming way too many knockback attacks and not doing combos. You should try using basic attack chains or cancelling your combos by launching the enemy in the air, that way you can combo them in the air. Also stop overusing lock on,

with dante you can also stinger into million stab and then cancel the millionstab before the last hit (because the last hit has knockback) into for example high time

I find it a lot easier to cancel million stab with guarding and gives more combo options as well.
