RB + LS back + X(Square) or Y(Triangle) usually summons that pet back to you.
It is also a good choice to get skill with: RB + LS forward + X(Square) or Y(Triangle), since it will cause that pet to dash toward enemy.
Lock-on on the offensive is only required against flying enemies and veined opponents(dunno their in-game name, there are 2 types of enemies that have those veins), because with lock-on you can keep them in the air, not letting them use hyper-armor or teleport. Against bosses, too, but that much is obvious.
Might just have to just either stand close or try not locking on.
or you could learn the dash move and command him to rush forward to attack the enemy ;)
It's like playing dmc 1 except at the start of every fight I have to use stinger 2-3 times.
Second, always keep an eye on where your pets are. If they're too far away from you, summon them to your position via a side/backwards dodge.
Third, the closer you are to an enemy the less the AI is prone to errors. Consider this as a sort of risk vs reward system, meaning that for maximum effect you want to be right next to the enemies.
