SOLUTION FOR FATAL APPLICATION ERROR (not just .ini)
Hello everyone. I'll be short:

What I didn't do:
- game reinstall
- windows update
- making of the .ini file in the game directory "read-only"

What I did, but didn't help on it's own:
- update Nvidia drivers
- update DirectX
- switch DirectX12 to 11 in the .ini file
- lower performance settings (almost everything except resolution in my game is low or medium)
- a few PC restarts
- game folder steam checking
- run game as administrator

What I did last time and after which actions Fatal Error on Mission #9 (for me) gone and I was able to complete the game without any more issues at all:
1) Nvidia Control panel - Manage 3D Settings - Program settings - Add Devil May Cry 5 - Scroll down to Power management mode - Select Prefer Maximum Performance
2) install 391 Nvidia driver

My PC:
i3770
Nvidia Geforce 660
16 GB RAM

Note: Only issue that I had was - Fatal Application Error, many times through the game but they were random. So I was able to restart missions and pass those areas before any issue happens. But in mission #9 Fatal Error happened each time before demons with scissors fight. Like 20 times maybe. So those actions above helped me.

Check it and hopefully everyone will be able to finally enjoy this game. Good luck!

Thank you for this! My game kept on crashing with error 0x887a0005 and 0x887a0006, and your solution seems to have it fixed! No more crashes!

Hi Fujin, sorry to bother you again but I've done everything you said and I still have the same crashes though with less frequency. Which version of windows are you using? some people report that upgrading it to a specific build fixes this error since directx and windows updates are tied. Also, is the game installed on your C drive or another one? Thanks for your help
No problem :)
I didn't try to update windows (and I have no idea does mine is the newest one)
Windows 10, Version 1803
Game is installed on C driver as well as Steam. Just because my HDD died half a year ago and I have only SSD in my PC with one driver.
Just one last question before I get the game again. Seeing as we have very similar specs other than the OS, are you able to play the game in online mode? Can you connect to people? That's my main reason for still waiting to get the game on PC rather than PS4, since i want to play with my friend on steam.

Yeah, everything is fine. No problem with connection

Yo, just wanted to say that your solution (installing an older driver version) worked for me. Thanks a bunch.
It's absolutely ridiculous that a "Game ready" driver causes the game it was SPECIFICALLY modified for to not work properly.

Agree'd. This fix helped me get passed a part in RE2remake that kept crashing as well, so i'm buying DMC5 again. Fingers crossed that it works.

You are my hero! I haven't play that much after I did the fix but I tested it in the last boss of mission 5 on DmD dificulty twice, which make that fight longer and trust me that fight is a crashfest specially during the fast part and it didn't crash.

I'm really curious how you got to the conclusion to the 391.01 drivers fix?

I'm using a 660 TI just in case.

Thank you!

Glad it helped you :)

I am not educated in programming but I had lots of such issues in many games for past 15 years - my pc rarely meets minimum requirements :D. Just dancing with a tambourine each time until issues will gone: google, forums, searching for different solutions, even those which might sound ridiculously, experimenting. From my experience the most stupid solutions are the right ones usually :D
So I've saw someones comment in depth of discussions about this issue. A guy just mentioned that maybe it will work, so it did.
Plus part with nvidia control panel was taken from DMC support page from F.A.Q. topic.
And as long as driver helped me and it was found so far in forums - I've decided to put it there so others won't struggle with searching the answer.
Sadly, I've no idea from whom it came originally. So, i am just a delivery guy :D

I see, I try lots of stuff that I found in google and none of them worked until this. Thanks again for sharing it here. Been playing the whole day with graphics set up for nice quality instead of how I play it before and the game haven't crash plus the game runs so much better no stuttering at all like before.

Hope that other players that are having this issue find this post too.

Unfortunately, I've done all this. Still getting crashes every now and then. Game is still playable, but it will eventually crash every time. Sometimes it takes a few hours, some times a few minutes. Sigh...

downgrading to 399.24 made this game work correctly for me. Arokhx, try going into the .ini and setting targetplatform=directx11 and then setting the ini to read only. if that doesn't work try downgrading your drivers to 399.24 if you're using an nvidia card

Man, here I was hoping I'd finally be able to fix this dumb crash, I literally played through the game twice and suddenly start having this issue. Tried everything here andddd...no luck.

Here's how I fixed my fatal application error: I simply changed the frame rate setting from variable to 60. I also turned vertical sync off. To see my PC specs, check out my profile.

Worked for me! I installed the www.nvidia.ru/download/driverResults.aspx/131517/ driver and change the power setting on the Nvidia control panel. Those two things were enough. Saved me completely. Thank you!
