So, how does Exceed work exactly?
So, appearently the tutorial is wrong about how it works but how does it work exactly and how do I take full advantage of the system? Right now I'm just trying to hit LT together with every slash which just results in an uncoordinated buttonmash and I'm just dying a lot.

Hit exceed right before your sword hits, the timing is a bit more lenient it seems this time around, really satisfying to learn though. Eventually you can buy max exceed which will top out your charges but the timing is stricter.

The timing is finicky, there is a small window to press hit after your hit connects with the enemy to get 1 charge. Once you get max exceed or max rev dont remember the name. There is a small instant at the beginning of the window for a perfect timing which charge your exceed to max.

And what does it do? Just increase you damage of your attack?

Yes exceed is a more powerful version of a move

Press LT just -after- the attack to get lvl 1 exceed, max act lets you instantly get lvl 3 exceed but its a frame perfect input. There's 3 lvls of exceed and all these represent is the power and speed of your next blow. Moves enhanced by exceed are streak, high roller, calibur, shuffle and helm splitter i might be missing one but i think thats all of them

Exceed and depending on what charge it's at (you buy extra charges up to 3 total) will change the animation for most attacks and always increase damage. Maybe before hitting was the wrong way to explain it, it's at the moment your sword makes contact you should be hitting exceed. If you're new to the game and series it's not an essential mechanic but it's something to try to learn as you go.

I disagree, for DMD it is essential.

That's good to know - cause I'm waaay better without than with it - hitting the extra button really throws me off and I'm just smacked all over the place.

I mean that's fair, but new players arn't starting with DMD. It's not essential for a casual first playthrough.

Does the OP sound like he's NEW TO THE GAME AND TO THE SERIES?

Yes.

Does that mean he's playng on DMD or anything above Devil Hunter? You answer.

I suppose but wouldnt it make sense for him / her to get used to it now if they plan on playing it on DMD? Imo everyone should play DMD cause they redesign the bosses and enemies, but thats just me.

Practice it with Split, you press L2 right when Nero hits the ground. The idea is you press L2 during the backswing of any attack. Its power increase is most noticable with directional moves. Once you get revved up bar, try doing streak or high time

Backswing?

I'm not new to the series - I played DMC 1 & 3 and even 4 but I didn't enjoy it very much cause the lame characterization of Nero kind of peed me off and Dante wasn't as much fun as he was in previous entries either. Well, also all of that was like 10 years ago so I remember jack about 4 except that I didn't enjoy the story at all.

Welp, I guess I just continue replaying the mission I'm currently on until I stop dying and get it down. Anyway, thanks for the info everyone!
