Crash on startup
As title says. Am i the only one? Updated graphics drivers and everything.

edit : for some people, like me, DX12 causes crash on startup for ANY game (the reason behind this for me, being related to either OC gpu or memory clocks). In order to bypass this, if you have the same issue, look in the game's Steam folder and modify the .ini file to have the game run under DX11. This worked for me.

edit : people in the thread reported that installing latest Direct X versions, or the latest version of Visual C++ fixed it for them.

Alright I had this for about a couple of days as well.

However, and don't ask me how it happened (maybe CCleaner) but DMC4 and the HD collection stopped working on my PC due to missing dll's.

Specifically the 2 for the HD collection (mfplat.dll and mfreadwrite.dll) were what I needed to get DMC5 up and running.

I couldnt get them by installing windows media packs, video codecs or re-installing windows entirely. I had to use a dodgy looking dll download site, which any sensible person would not recommend. If you wanna take the risk like I did here are the links for them, just copy them into the game folder where the .exe is (I feel its a bit too risky to drop them in sys32 and register them)

Oh and on a side note, I'm currently crashing in Nico's shop where its loading those little skill preview videos. Another user downloaded video codecs to fix it for him, didn't work for me so I'm now doing a manual upgrade to windows 1809.

Link for the codec that helped him below

Couldn't find a way to remove that dll, but im up and running anyway.

Solved my in-game video loading problem thanks to this guy telling us to use the Codec Tweak Tool.

I am getting this fatal error message and have changed the .ini file to every combination of directx i can think of and saved and retried, what keeps happening is it will save what i type in, then i try to open the game and it crashes, reopen the file and it has reverted back to the way it was to begin with as if i hadn't changed anything.

It seems that people started posting their own fixes to crashes. It's worth noting that the fix i posted in my first post worked only for me and my sittuation (which is related to games crashing on startup if they run on DX12), and that it might not work for everyone (where the crash could be owed to something else), and not to missing .dll's, missing drivers, missing directX version or visual C++.

Have you checked if the file is read-only? That might be the issue. Also, what is the fatal eror message you are getting? DX12 crashes seem to be related to people running OC gpu or cpu, which can be related to voltage, clock speeds or any OC programs like MSI afterburner interfering with the game somehow. If you are OC-ing then it could be a DX12 issue.

Thanks, I already solved my fatal application exit, it turns out i needed to install windows automatic updates because this game uses codecs from windows media player for cut scenes with files for windows media player that are from Windows Update. after i did windows update my game worked the first time i tried it.

I do however have a fix for it in the meantime. I go to the game folder and triple click (or spam) the exe. it sounds weird I know but when i double click it, it doesnt work, then when i spam it, it works? wtf capcom
This happens to me, the game originally worked and then stopped working with the same issue, this work around works for me. Would like a permanent solution to launch through Steam. Anybody got a fix?

Have you checked if the file is read only? And are you using an integrated GPU?

Yes I have... It was not read-only. I changed and saved the file... and it reverted to previous state on its own!!! Plus, I need a REAL FIX!

Just unplug your Generic USB Joystick, X360, PS4 controller and give it a try.
StylishRogue Mar 18, 2019 @ 5:22pm
I found a solution for some people and myself as well. If you are running the Discord Overlay on DMC5, it will crash the game on start up. Try disabling it if you have it active.
