Game crashes/freezes

I've run into several issues since trying to run the game for the first time:
1. Game crashes on startup
When I click play, a large window titled 'Devil May Cry 5' appears, then it says the window isn't responding, and that the program has stopped working. I verified integrity of the game files and restarted my PC, and the game successfully launched without crashing.

2. Game freezes at autosave screen
So after the title cards loaded I was prompted to make a save file, I used my controller to accept, A. After that it warned me that when I saw the dmc5 logo it was autosaving and that I shouldn't turn off the game, there was another prompt at the bottom to accept it, A. Only pressing A didn't do anything, nor did any other button on my controller. I closed the game, restarted it, same thing, game just freezes after the title cards and autosave information. I did it once more without the controller, it accepted my input but then it just displayed a blank grey screen, nothing else loaded.

Windows 8.1
GTX 1080
i7-6700k 4.0 ghz
16GB DDR4 ram 3000mhz
Xbox 360 controller
144hz 1920 x 1080 monitor

So I've got the game running now but it won't accept my controller inputs, ill update here as needed..
