Difficulty modes:

- Human: by default
- Devil Hunter: by default
- Son of Sparda: beat Urizen either at the Prologue or in mission 8 in any previous difficulty OR beat Devil Hunter
- Dante Must Die: beat Urizen either at the Prologue or in mission 8 in SoS mode OR beat SoS
- Heaven or Hell: beat Urizen either at the Prologue or in mission 8 in DMD OR beat DMD
- Hell and Hell: same as HoH


Costumes:

- EX Dante, EX Nero, EX Nico, EX Lady, EX Trish: buy the DLC or by having prepurchase the game
- EX V: buy the DLC or as Nero kill the Hell Judecca in the credits section in any difficulty
- EX Vergil: buy the DLC or as Nero kill the Hell Judecca and as Dante kill more enemies than Vergil during the credits section in SoS or harder
- Super Nero, Super Dante, Super V: buy the DLC or beat DMD difficulty


Secret Cutscenes:

- Secret Prologue Ending: beat Urizen at the prologue in any difficulty
- Secret Ending: have Dante kill more demons than Vergil at the credits in any difficulty


Special taunts:

- Bloody Palace taunts: just beat Bloody Palace with the respective character
- Nero's chewing gum taunt: as Nero kill the Hell Judecca in the credits section in any difficulty (R1+L3+TouchPad)


Dante's extra slots: beat SoS

I appreciate that, but the point is if next difficulty mode is unlocked by doing so. Quite probably though

This one always comes up but isn't true, guess the misconception comes from the fact this is where a lot of people unlocked it more easily as everything dies in one hit. The original way OP posted (Kill Judecca as Nero + kill more demons than Vergil in credits) on SoS or higher is correct.

If credits appear, next difficulty unlocks. It's like in Prologue... It counts as Game Completed.
