V's combat is extremely dull and tedious
Since you can attack with both animals at the same time, all you have to do is spam both attacks. V himself can stay far away from combat and teleport in to finish enemies. There is zero challenge. I haven't lost a single point of health, but spamming both attacks all the time starts to hurt my fingers.

Not even considering what a terrible and annoying character V is.

With Nero it was a fun combat system, although the controls are outdated (now "hardcore" dmc fans will whine at me, it's simply true, modern character action games, mostly from Platinum, have much better controls), but with Nero you were encouraged not to button spam, clicking only once with each attack and using the Exceed system (which is a dumb system too if you ask me, but that's a different topic).

I know most hardcore DMC will now come with all sorts of insults towards me.

My question is: How long is V's part? I don't want to play as him.

I find it otherwise, I can't stand Nero's annoyance, V is far more enjoyable to play with.

I still like Dante better tho

Really? I can't imagine how V could be enjoyable, but if you like his playstyle, then that's great.

Having to hold the lock on button to be able to evade is outdated. Having to hold the lock on button for anything really is outdated. A lock on is simply an assist because with analog sticks you cant control the camera so quickly and precisely. Having to hold the lock on button makes no sense, it just so because your moves change when you have lock on.

When you play with mouse and keyboard it becomes even more obnoxious, because then I dont need lock on at all, cause I can control the camera perfectly with the mouse, but I have to use it because the game forces me to do so.

But being simple doesn't mean having less depth. You don't have to use every single button on the controller and bind it with multiple actions depending on if you hold another button or not to create a combat system that has depth. You are correct, that is the reason why the lock-on works the way it works, but I think it didn't need to. Anyway, that's a different discussion, and I don't have a big problem with that really, it's just one of the small things that annoy me in this game, and because these small things start to sum up, I start to mention all of them. V is a big problem though, in my opinion.

On higher difficulties every ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ starts to attack you, not your boys. With more tight timing and more devastating attacks the challenge appears and punch you in the balls.

So remap it, i don't understand the problem with controls if you can change it however you want

Exceed system (which is a dumb system too

Why? it gives skilled players more agressive moves and suits Nero's punkass character.

4 missions

There is only Devil Hunter to select on your first playthrough, which is way too easy.

Sure the Exceed system does add something to the game, but it does so in a very awkward way. It feels like a clumsy way to encourage people not to button mash, but there are way better ways to accomplish that. But again, it's okay, it's just one of the small things that annoy me. In a different game I wouldn't even mention it.

I continued playing and thankfully you can select between V and Nero afterwards, but I guess there are 2 more V only missions if you say there are 4.

I find V to be the easiest to control out of the 3 guys... He is designed to attract more female players which is a successful strategy. As a first timer to DMC, I do find the lock-on button and dodge mechanism to present a sharp learning curve. With Nero, it's like I gotta press 5 buttons at once or something and with Dante, I regret I only have 10 fingers and a crappy controller. My thumbs and palms started cramping at one point. Maybe this is the incorrect way of playing but V is still a great character and he totally broke the traditional mould of a hack n' slash hero :)

@ Quixotic

Thanks but really? I can imagine it's similar to playing the piano with Dante :p

V on any difficulty beyond devil hunter is terrible, serious stain on a mostly great game, also agree about the wonky lock on, its absolutely dated. Still love the game, because parts of it are so satisfying, but its got some seriously dated mechanics.

Yeah, but you can defeat Urizen in the Prologue and unlock SOS immediately
Also, that's kind of the point of DMC, first playthroughs are like tutorials to git gut

Which is? Btw i think the style meter is the real anti-buttonmash mechanic here and exceed is like one more combo in the mix.

Yeah, 9 and 14

DmC Devil May Cry lacked lock-on and got ♥♥♥♥ for it
Medusahead Jun 16, 2019 @ 12:07pm
It's not.
samDLIVE Jun 16, 2019 @ 1:03pm
Yeah people were wrong about DmC, I personally love DMC 5, but DmC was still a much better game when it came to fighting multiple enemies and making it feel fluid. The other reason tho i think is that DmC is best played with an Xbox style controller layout, and a large majority of the fanbase of DMC is on Playstation. Anyway it was complicated, like I said DMC 5 could make lock on work, but they didn't even bother fixing any of its flaws, the camera constantly turning in boss fights and non fixed inputs is a nightmare. I'm not talking about low level ♥♥♥♥, I'm talking about when I'm fighting Cerberus or Artemis and staying in the air, the camera literally flips out. There is literally no consistent way to do calibur, because the camera swaps position so fast for whats back/forward, left/right. If they had fixed inputs like Monster Hunter a lot of this would feel better, because even while the camera was being dumb. I could at least input my command consistently.
samDLIVE Jun 16, 2019 @ 1:07pm
Also, V is a perfect example of why the lock on is so dated and awful, he literally is a buffer character. And 90% of the way to get S rank in anything higher than devil hunter is camera manipulation, reading, dancing, then calling nightmare. Why can't I just input commands as V when half the time I'm in stationary things like reading the poetry or doing a taunt. Like I said poorly thought out, flashy character to show off Capcom's insane animation team.
Lu2 Jun 16, 2019 @ 1:38pm
if V get more familars to play with for more strategy and variety. it would be more fun. those 3 guys gets boring fast easpecialy nightmare

in the end V plays similary to Devil forger from Castlevania Curse of Darknesss which had ♥♥♥♥ ton of demons to play with + evolving+ rpg mechanics
