When should I do inferno mode?
I just finished story mode and am about 1/4 of the way through getting an SS on every mission. Would now be a good time to start inferno mode or are there some other things I should do first?

I highly recommend reinforcing your gear to max level first. On top of that, if you’re using blades, I’d highly recommend getting the Wings of Freedom skill for your custom character (obtained by leveling Levi to Rank 10 in Another Mode, I believe). That skill allows you to attack repeatedly and do max damage. Without that skill, it’s going to be a painful slog.

Also, stay away from the 200 length blades for this mode (since the Titans like to clump together) and consider running skills that lower detection/aggro.

Might also be a good idea to do Territory Recovery Mode for the skill “Elimination Bounty” and basically never unequip it. That skill will give you a bunch of materials after the end of a missions as long as get 10 Complete Elimination medals.

There’s other stuff you can do but I’d recommend the above for the bare minimum preparation.

Can you please elaborate the logic behind that? Does the increased blade length increase the distance you need to travel before attacking the titan or something?

Since Titans start to group close together in Inferno mode, the long blades sometimes hit another Titan beside the one you’re targeting. Sometimes they don’t hit a limb of the adjacent Titan (I.e. because of different Titan height) which makes the blade bounce because it counts as “not focusing on a part”. It leaves you open to get grabbed and starts messing with your mission rank due to “missing” attacks.
