Having trouble with buddy actions. Please help!

Hey guys. So, I'm new to the game, just started, and I'm on the part where we're training after dark; we've built both our bases and now we're attacking dummy titans as a team. Problem is, I can't seem to work the buddy actions. Playing on PC using M&KB.

The character icons on the side are green and there are little blue things above their heads. The game tells me to use my middle mouse button and a selection of number keys. But those don't seem to do anything.

When I attack a titan in this drill, I always fail. Been trying for ages now and no success, despite being fine in the previous practise. It feels like the game's blocking my progression because I'm not doing something, but...I don't know how? Call me a noob, whatever (I am), but I need a little help here.

UPDATE: Fixed it! Turns out my middle mouse button wasn't working. Changed the controls and now it's working.

Not sure what the problem is, but those do something. Maybe you are not holding the middle mouse button? Left side of the screen there are 4 portraits of your comrades. When you hold the middle mouse button it should expand, and then, without releasing the middle mouse button, you press the numerical key of your choice. Is the only thing that I can think of, I just did the mission with no problems.
