Report a translation problem
It's to avoid confusion with people having the same first name (think of common names like 'John'), at least that's what they always told me.
Usually you'll have nicknames in your own unit anyway, like Connie being called 'baldy' or Sasha being called 'potatogirl' or something.
I did read on another board a few mins ago it has to do the friendship system. Supposedly, with higher friendship they get more informal and use your given name more than your surname.
Either way I just kinda wish I knew for sure.
