Always being called by your surname?

I've been watching twitch streams and I noticed the characters use your surname a lot. Are they supposed to call you by your surname all the time or is this a case of the original game having the surname first as in Japan and it just being a translation mistake?

I do believe it's actually a military thing.... from all militaries

From what I've noticed they switch it around, but the surname is used more frequently for sure.

It's to avoid confusion with people having the same first name (think of common names like 'John'), at least that's what they always told me.
Usually you'll have nicknames in your own unit anyway, like Connie being called 'baldy' or Sasha being called 'potatogirl' or something.

Sometimes I'm called by my first name. Depends on the conversation. Mostly my last, I think.

I would have thought that too but the cadets all call each other by their first names. You don't see anyone else saying Ackerman when they mean Mikasa.

I did read on another board a few mins ago it has to do the friendship system. Supposedly, with higher friendship they get more informal and use your given name more than your surname.

Either way I just kinda wish I knew for sure.
