There is no pre-missions, no events to lead to that, nothing. It's just one mission after the first credits/ending. Hell, the 3 titan shifters that came to destroy the walls didn't consider going there since Levi is surely to be in the Walls, someone that the Beast Titan wants to avoid at all costs and I assure you that Bertholdt and Rainer, possibly, want to do the same, along with others.
All in all, if we go by cannon, our character lives/we live and if we go by the AU there is a probabily that we are either dead or alive.
The way I see it is this is just a foot in the door in case they decide to have the same player created character continue on in the next game from events already unfolded. Rather than trying to find some reason to shoe-horn in a new character after all these events already took place.
As it is, the next game would probably be as much 'Attack on Human' as 'Attack on Titan' if they follow the manga directly.
