Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis

indiana jones and the fate of atlantis: how does it hold up in 2018?
Being tired of all the FPS and Open World Games i played recently, i decided to give some of the classic Lucas Arts Adventures a try. I‘m a big Indina Jones Fan, but also an absolute Adventure-Noob and completely new to the genre. So, since it is widely regarded as one of the definitive classic adventures, i started with Indiana Jones and the fate of Atlantis as my very first classic adventure game.

And I am quite disappointed.

They did an absolutely amazing job with the graphics, sounddesign and voice acting for the time, but the gameplay itself is rather frustrating. if you want to interact with stuff, you almost have to be pixel-perfect with your mouse. you almost have to scan every single pixel on the screen to find out what you can interact with or pick up. but that would not be that much of a problem, if the puzzles would not be as absolutely confusing and inconsistent as they are. The moment when i realized that i wouldnt have much fun with this game was when i had to put an old bubble gum under indys shoe so it would povide the grip for him to climb a coal chute. What being with the ability to reason and think logical would seriously consider putting an old, dried up bubble gum under his shoe to climb a coal chute?

indiana jones and the infernal machine is imo the best action adventure of all time. It had brilliant puzzles and beats any of the classic tomb raider games by far.The action-oriented Indiana Jones and the emperors tomb, while having very few well-designed puzzles and being focused almost completely on platforming and hand-to-hand combat was still a damn fun game too for the most part. between those two, indiana jones and the fate of atlantis is a rather frustrating trial-and-error game for me.

imo it does not hold up very well in 2018 and is definitely not the timeless classic most people seem to think it is.

Am i really alone with this opinion?

Older point & click adventures do suffer more from "pixel hunting".

Unrealistic puzzle solutions are present in perhaps not every point & click adventure, but it's very common. I think these puzzles are a part of the fun of it though, I mean it's not illogical that the gum would add grip, just unrealistic that it would be this effective. I think to enjoy this, you just need patience and the right expectations.

Some, but not all of the love for this game is just nostalgia. It does have some great atmosphere and pace. I still enjoy the story, including the mythology of Atlantis, the mysteries of archaeology, and the globetrotting, all which feel very "Indy". As with many games, I also love having a sidekick, which makes certain approaches and situations more interesting, as well as adding some healthy banter.

I think your criticism is all fair, but hope you give it another go when you're in the mood.
you sure have a good taste in music. tool is amazing and lateralus is their best record. along with aenema that is of course.

The bubblegum solution was a nod to cartoons of the time where gum would be used as grip to climb up slippery surfaces. This goes for some other 'silly solutions' as they are references to the pop culture at the time

Probably not but it sounds like you're viewing it without rose tinted glasses. They work wonders.
