Sorry about it being confusing. When you light a fire you use your torch then automatically snuff your torch and put it away.
So you still have it. Leave the fire and open your gear. Then light your torch.
If you ever lose your torch you can craft a new one. Same w your dagger.
Hope that helps. If not, let me know :).
Just to clarify you do NOT lose your torch when lighting a fire. You simply snuff it and put it away. You can relit it after exiting the rest fire. You do NOT need to walk away or totally leave the rest fire’s area to light your torch.
If you drop your torch you can pick it up. It never runs out of “fuel”. You can only have one torch.
If you lose your torch, you can craft a new one. If you have no supplies for a torch you can attack the ground or hit walls to spark light so you can see a bit of your surroundings. When you are low on certain supplies the game increases the chance that you'll get those supplies from monsters you defeat.
I hope that helps. Sorry you found it frustrating.
This is now fixed in the latest update. Your torch auto-lights when you leave a fire.
