Steam Deck
TL;DR
Proton Experimental and TDP Limit 7 (optional for battery saving)

For anyone wondering, Steam Deck seems to be a lot more stable. There's an update today, not sure what it does outside of adding Christmas theme, but I was playing it a few days ago and upon switching compatibility to "Proton Experimental", the game seems to play a ton more stable.

If it helps any, I have it installed on the internal SSD.

Also note I have yet to run around everywhere on the map, so mileage may favor in some areas. At Larry's Arcade I'd get really poor performance, almost in the teens once inside. After proton experimental, it's much higher framerate and I'm not on potato graphics either. I think it's middle ground in the settings. TDP Limit set to 7 for battery conserving. I could probably put it higher and get more FPS, but I'm fine with 26-38FPS, it's not a twitchy game and moves pretty slowly if you're not sprinting everywhere. Indoors and outdoors seem to be a bit more stable than what it was without a compatibility set.

How's the controller support in the game?

It's fine. I can play this with native gamepad support on Steam Deck and either keyboard/mouse or gamepad on PC. I like that it's simple controls, but Steam Deck you'll have to change the trackpads to mouse controls to help navigate the main menu and sometimes the pause menu.
