If it's going to be a while before the final area, or you're having too much trouble to get through the trial, head over to the third area of the game and buy the most powerful sword there which will take a very long time to grind up enough gold to get it depending on how far in the game you are.
For armor, the best you can find is in the final dungeon, there's a room with a bunch of ghosts who act as merchants, look around for one that only trades in mana crystals, it sells a piece of armor that sounds like a joke at first called "Bikini" with really poor stats to start. But once you enchant it to the final level, it suddenly upgrades its defense enough that it's even better than the most expensive armor you can get in the third area of the game.
One other tip, runes can really change how powerful armor/weapons are. Try to save your more powerful runs for later if you can. And farm the rifts that appear, they can be pretty amazing for mana and runes. And don't be scared to sell off old swords and armors, you'll find more pretty easily once you get the hang of replaying old levels to find more loot. If it's not as strong as what you got right now, or doesn't have an elemental ability that's actually useful for you, sell it.
the only question is whether you'd prefer combo attack+ or regular attack+ or maybe immunities to particular status effects.
