Resolution keeps reverting back to native no matter what I change.
I've searched everywhere online and tried every fix but nothing seems to work.

I'm trying to use DSR from 4k down to 1080p(which works fine briefly) but then every time I relaunch the game, load a save file or the game plays a cut-scene the resolution just switches back to native.

Things I have tried without success
- I have edited the config files/.ini(tried with it saved as read only and not)
- Tried the various Unreal Engine 4 launch commands in Steam.
- Disabled full screen optimisations and high dpi scaling(right click .exe compatibility tab)
- Changed to the desired DSR resolution on the desktop prior to launching the game, it still switches back before the title screen.
-Disabled DSR and created a custom 4k resolution and enabled that prior to game launch, same as previous point.

These are some of the threads I came across discussing the issue -

A helpful comment or any word of a fix would be much appreciated :cupup:

How hard is it to just maybe say "hey its been a few weeks but we are aware of this ongoing issue, apologies but we are still working on a fix"

Joker devs and support team.

Dunno if you are around, but if you are. Can you try this out?

Can you see if you add this to your GameUserSettings.ini (located in %localappdata%\Biomutant\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor) under
[/script/engine.gameusersettings]
bUseDesktopResolutionForFullscreen=False
version=5
and maybe under
[/script/biomutant.biomutantgameusersettings]
bUseDesktopResolutionForFullscreen=False

This "version=5" bit you said to add up the top only remains if I set the file to read only, If I start the game with that checked it remains but didn't seem to do anything.

-Once I made your suggested changes I first booted the game up In native 1080p resolution, changed to 4k dSR in the settings menu hit apply. I see the Biomutant saving logo at the main menu screen then as as I load my save file(during the Biomutant splash screen it flickers and switched back to native)
-Second try I did same again but with the GameUserSettings.in set as read only.
-Third and fourth tries were with 4k DSR set before starting the game and the GameUserSettings.in as read only and not.
-Fifth and sixth try was with a custom 4k resolution set before starting the game and DSR disabled same GameUserSettings.ini changes.

Its a very strange Issue as these things either usually just work or don't I've never had a game where the changes are accepted but then the game changes things back at different times.

The points I've noticed where the resolution will switch back to native are right during startup after the 101 logo shows(it seems the selected resolution stays for these first few seconds at launch if the game was quit after switching to a higher res before the game switches it back)
Once you load a save file or start a new game(during Biomutant splash screen)
After a cutscene/gameload.
Apparently after a death but I never managed to die so cant confirm.

Thanks again for suggesting something :cupup: if theirs anything else you think of to try please let me know and if you think a video of me making these changes and the game switching back would help in someway I can do that.

Just to add to the previous post

I just did my 6 trys again with the top of the GameUserSettings.ini set like this instead

[/script/engine.gameusersettings]
bUseDesiredScreenHeight=True
bUseDesktopResolutionForFullscreen=False
version=5(as i said this line comes and goes depending on the read only box so I did multiple with and without)

Didn't work unfortunately just looked like it might so had to try.

Does this happen with other games using Unreal Engine 4? Displays report thier native resolution to the OS. My guess is that either Biomutant or UE4 discard the settings when the display used to render has a smaller resolution than that what you want. The reset to native looks like a failsafe to me (at least when starting the game). As if Biomutant or UE4 have issues to porperly check if your requested resolution is valid. Especially since DSR makes 4k a valid resolution on a, for example, FHD display.

It's just a guess. I think it's an issue with either Biomutant or UE4 in general. You could file a bug report.
ZOOCH716 Jun 25, 2021 @ 10:50pm
Thanks for that Reven :cupup:
This is a quick list of unreal engine 4 games I just found on Google.

https://www.thegamer.com/great-games-use-unreal-4-game-engine/

Off that list I have these on PC

Octopath Traveller
Ark Survival Evolved
Dragon Ball Fighter Z
Little Nightmares 1
Shenmue 3
Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order
Street Fighter V
Hellblade Senuas Sacrifice

All of these games worked fine using standard DSR set from their ingame display setting.

Not only 4k DSR though sometimes I'll use it from 1440p down or 2880 x 1620 all depends on performance really.

Just seems to be a Biomutant issue from what I can tell and from the amount of posts I've seen discussing the issue(none recently unfortunately) I think the issue has been reported quite enough already.
Reven Jun 25, 2021 @ 10:53pm
I actually know what could cause the issue... I tried to get Biomutant running on Linux. It works fine with an exception, video playback. Media Foundation causes the problem, which is used for video playback in UE4.

Everytime the resolution resets, a video is played. And Media foundation seems to override the game's resolution to the native resolution if it's to big.

Edit: This is not related to linux though. Media foundation isn't working on linux properly but that's how I made the connection.

so, is there a solution to this??
i have the same problem and i dont know anymore what to do about it...............
Reven Nov 23, 2021 @ 11:50am
There is one thing you could try: Set your desktop resolution to match the resolution you wanna use in Biomutant. This should prevent Biomutant from resetting the resolution to 1080p or whatever your native display resolution is. I guess Unreal Engine 4 takes the desktop resolution and resets the game to that on specific occasions. If this doesn't work, probably nothing will work as this seems to be a bug in UE4 by the looks of it.

CalicoJack Nov 23, 2021 @ 1:32pm
thank you.
but i dont get it.....
i have a 1080p Display.
1080p Desktop resolution.

but the game doesnt change to any other resolution and bugs around if i try to.

and i have like 10 other games running on UE4 that do not have this problem.
Reven Nov 23, 2021 @ 1:46pm
Did it work?

Not all games have this issue, but some UE4 games do have the same or at least a similar issue with DSR. Killing Floor2 has or had a similar issue, IIRC. And Borderlands 2, I guess. Hence the help page from Nvidia's customer service.
CalicoJack Nov 23, 2021 @ 1:53pm
i am not using DSR with the desktop resolution.
i am using the native display resolution as Desktop resolution.

1080p

Yes, I know. But that's the fix that works for Borderlands. I would give it a shot. If you want to play Biomutant at 4k, set your desktop resolution to 4k as well. If my assumption is correct that Biomutant resets to your desktop resolution, that should fix it.

ok, i understand.
thank you!

i still hope the devs will find a better fix to this problem =)
