DLC's are they worth it?
Just heard about this game and am about to make the purchase and was wondering if the DLC's are worth the bundle price or should I just grab the standalone game for now?

Just grab the standalone game for now - not that the DLCs are bad, but the game is great on its own. If you like the game, you can then spice it up further with some DLCs.

Besides........its learning curve is pretty steep and may not be for you!! 8^D
I grabbed the bundle and just didn't think about it.

There's a new DLC in a few days though, so the bundle might be on sale then.

I think the game of the week also allows you to play with DLC you don't own, so you can experience the features. But I might be wrong.

Welcome to the Old World friend. :)
Ōld World goes on good sales frequently. The DLC add a lot to the game and all of them are very good. The low points of some of the DLC are actively being worked on by the devs to make them even better, and there is a new DLC in a few days,

That being said, the standalone main game is truly magnificent as it is, and if anything the DLC detract from its fine, beautiful game balance, if only by a hair. You get the DLC when you want a more varied, wide-open, less min/max game.
I've to admit, while the DLC spice things up, the standard game is as good as it gets,

Hi,

It really depends on how experienced you are with 4x games. The DLCs deepen the content and some of the mechanics, but don't add different ways to play, so the core game isn't fundamentally changed by any of the DLCs.

You have 2 that mostly add scenarios (single player campaigns) and a new faction each, and 3 others which add events that enrich certain aspects of the gameplay (religion, characters, wonders).

If you're relatively inexperienced, the base game will already have enough to keep you completely absorbed. If you have some experience, I'd suggest going through each DLC and maybe pick the ones you're really keen to experience, as they can be a lot of fun, Sacred and Prophane especially.

Have fun!

Thanks a LOT for all this great advice. I purchased the standalone game for now and will look into the DLC's later since so many people state the game is great on its own. I have been playing 4x games since my packard bell 486 and was floored when I heard about this game. I have no idea how this one released without me knowing about it. Kinda glad it did since it seems to have evolved very nicely. Great community here!

I almost NEVER encounter a crash and the few times I have, a simple reboot fixed it. The game is so well done. The stories make the game immersive as heck, and the AI is one of the best of any game genre. You cant go wrong with OW, dzones.
Now, if we just had tanks and bombers lol

I'd have said get the base game and play it for a bit until you grok the mechanics, and then add the DLC -- which, in my experience on Steam, anyway, you can still get the DLC in a future bundle if you have the base game, they won't charge you for it. So you can still get the 35% off or whatever, but you don't have to buy the vanilla game again.

Naturally, you can (and I'd recommend) play just the base game first and add the DLC you already own! But yea, there's a learning curve, even if you're a Civ/4X veteran.

EDIT to add that I just looked at the store page. I don't yet own the most recent DLC (Behind the Throne), but I can get the "bundle" that includes everything, but only charges me for the one. And the bundle is on sale, but the DLC itself is not. So I'm going to buy the bundle and end up getting 30% off the one DLC I don't have - tho I've not heard much good about some of the stuff they add, like Grand Viziers.

I'll just add that the game mechanics can be pretty complicated so read over the few guides available in the "Guides" section. They can be very helpful.

Don't be discouraged if you get your rear handed to you. Just try lower settings and read the guides. I think it took me around 8 games before I started getting the feel of it.

Also if you don't like a start position, just start over on a new map. It can make a huge difference if you're just starting.
Idk if they are worth it, I bought all of them on impulse.
