Network via the server works great (apparently one can create their own server, as well) & 'lan' works great as well.
The game also offers the traditional 'hotseat' & all games are turn based; though there is a simultaneous mechanism offered for a number of turns, just never tried that.
I strongly recommend to read the game manual (starting at page 152), in case you want to know about all the options in multiplayer sessions. I.e. the host can (and I think should, if players start war against each other) switch the turn style in simultaneous sessions.
