That said, I believe the coinage tech unlocks worker automation. I forget if/what tech unlocks Explorer automation.
Generally though, automation is pretty incompatible with the orders system and it's pretty easy to forget or not know how many orders you need to save for your civilians to use. It's a different kind of micro where you have to pay attention to when a worker becomes free cause if it's finished an improvement in a turn, and then you use up all of your orders, then that worker won't do anything. It could take you a few turns to realize that you've been moving stuff around or spending orders and your civilian work force has basically frozen in place.
True, Feigro. I have a couple of hours in the demo and I didn't think about it that way, which makes a lot of sense now that you mentioned it. Guess the game is not for me then.
