Rebels
I bought a game, started playing, ignored silly popups. Eventually some rebels started materializing inside my territory, as at the same time Danes decided to attack Rome with a zillion units. Where do the rebels come from? What kind of weird "AI vs human, suffer fool" mechanics is this? How do I stop rebels from popping up?

Maybe you shouldn't ignore "silly popups"

Rebels usually appear because a city is discontent. This can be caused due to large population, lack of luxuries, certain social policies, events, pillaging and more. Can't really tell you what exactly caused it without more info.

ignored silly popups, lose the game, but I think I should win, question the game, thumb down.
I don't know, but I have conclusion.jpg

pls stop at step 2, just read the popups.
or maybe try some casual games when you just want simple relax.

Tried again. Got to assign governors, got to distribute some luxury items, avoided rebellions. Still popups ruin the tempo quite a lot. I focus on doing A, but there are popups for totally unrelated stuff, as if I'm playing a game and being bothered by popups for a second game at the same time.
Many things here are not clear. GUI should be way better.

You can turn the 'silly pop-ups' off in the settings when creating a game. But while you have them on....don't ignore them. Another reason rebels may have come about is an event in one of those silly pop-ups where refugees have shown up, and you unwittingly allowed slums to be built which give a percent chance for rebels to spawn in a city that the slums are built in.

In Advanced Setup you can change the frequency of events. Sounds like event level Minimal may be of interest to you.
Or if you're just after the pure 4x enjoyment of the game, you can choose no character mode (also in advanced setup), and do away with characters, events, families.

OP is the reason strategy games are losing popularity and don't get created as often now.
