You need to increase the production of whatever resource being used to build the unit (iron, food, stone, etc). During a unit build all the towns production of that resource is sent to building the unit instead of being passed out to the storage pool for the resource.

Spend some time reading the 'manual', it will be well worth it!

You need to increase the production of whatever resources being used to build the unit: growth, civics, or training.

Assuming you can afford the resource cost (e.g. 50 iron for a warrior), how fast it will build will depend on how much Training is generated in the city. To increase training, build miners, build barracks and ranges, train officer specialists, etc.

Different builds use different resources out of growth, civics, or training. For example, training won't help you build specialists any faster; that depends on your civics output (in the city).

It can be useful to specialize cities for certain types of production, like military. Others can to varying degrees be specialized for growth or civics. I try to have a reasonable minimunm capacity of all three production types in my cities, though. Growth & civics work well together - building a lot of stonecutters to generate civics requires growth also.

Thanks!
When you mouse over a unit, it says "Production: " followed by a number and a resource type. That tells you how much of a resource it costs to produce that unit.

For example, if it costs 50 Training to produce a unit, and your city is making 11 Training per turn, it'll take 4 turns to produce that unit.

5 turns, not?
Military units require training, workers and settlers require growth, specialist require civics. Some families provide 2 shields per month, some families don't provide any. Some leaders grant a shield bonus, barracks and ranges are a must for shield production, avoid things like estates in cities where you want production as estates provide a negative shield bonus. The ore special resources provides additional shields. Building specialist officers in your barracks, or miners will make more shields (2 for the barracks, 2 for a barracks officer). Old World is essentially a game to make more units than your enemy...it's never a bad idea to make your first or second city prioritize all things for shield production and growth, then dedicate another city to farming choosing family type that boosts food and growth.. It's also a good idea to rush "growth" production (granaries and farm specialists) in every city type as that leads to more orders and more specialists. It may not be obvious, but the monthly Training increase to your stack will go down as you product units, so mass military production will reduce the number of shields available for promotions and upgrades. The absolute fastest way to make units it to buy them outright, any governor can finish production of military units with Civics, some governors or tech let you hurry production with shields or gold.

Mind = blown

The bar that separates the build areas shows what is needed for building units or projects (growth, shields, civics). Make specific projects to enhance those currencies. For example, need more civics? Get drama and build odeons, then build poets. Build quarries then build stonecutters. Research Courthouses and then build scribes. Need growth? Build sheep, wheat, sorgum, deer, then build their workers. Need faster production of military units? Build officers, mines and miners, but be sure to increase resource production to support the new units.
