New Bireme placement
Question about a potential issue of new Bireme placement when built on a city that borders both a lake and the ocean. I believe I hit this issue in the past - the Bireme was launched into the lake and thus was pretty much useless for exploration.

Perhaps this issue was with a free bonus Bireme which was plopped down near the capital which bordered a lake/sea.

Anyhow, for a new city constructing a Bireme and the city borders both a lake and the ocean, where will the Bireme end up?

If you build a Harbor, constructed ships will appear on the harbor tile. If no harbor but the city centre tile is adjacent to coast, the ship will appear in the city. Failing both these conditions, the ship will appear in the larger body of water, so should always be in the ocean. Lake tiles (the terrain shows as Lake when hovered over) are invalid for ships so they will never appear there.

For free tech cards, units always appear in the capital if possible. If the capital owns no coastal tiles, a free ship will appear in the closest city to the capital that does own a water tile.

Most other such games the city counts as passable terrain for ships built in it.

Think there was a patch that addressed that. Doesn't help though when there are two sea areas (as with the Old World map and Med and Red Sea).

The only way I've found to work it is with a empty harbor in the preferred body of water, but you can't do that until mid-later game, long after your first bireme.

As for city site being a canal, that's true only for the hex that bears the label, and requires water on both sides.

Be great to be able to pick where the ship spawns more easily. I mean, my nation knows how to build a bireme but we're not sophisticated enough to build it on the right body of water? :)

Hmmm.. isn't there a map marker thingy that events can use to place randomly apprearing improvements? If we could set those on owned water, the city could then use it as the "harbor" where new ships appear. (Would also be useful for ships from techs or events).

It could get a tutorial pop-up if you are building a ship in a city that borders two seas, with an explanation how to do it.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

There's a contextual popup that lets you schedule reminders for a given hex - so the idea of a contextual popup to Create Spawnpoint for Unit seems like it would be do-able. Frustrating to have your navy in the wrong body of water.
