Old World
Carthage Scenario #3 - Opening strategies?
Hi, new player here, having a bit of difficulty getting a grip on the 3rd scenario in the Carthage campaign. After several failed tries, I sent every single unit I had to defend Panormus, losing most of them to the Romans. Then immediately the Roman fleet appears near Sicilia, wipes out everything I have left, and then on the next turn, a massive land army appears like magic on the African coast, and takes Carthage a few semesters later. I was originally playing on Strong difficulty, but later I dropped it down to Good and I still can't do it. Am I missing a key strategy here or something simple, or do I just need to "git gud"? =(

I'm in the middle of a complete difficulty rework for this scenario. It was originally released a bit more than a year ago and there have been too many changes to the base game so the scenario is no longer working as intended - it's certainly meant to be difficult but the current difficulty is way harder than what it needs to be, and some mechanics are unclear.

#4 is also getting a rework.
Hi, just wondering if the Sep 14th patch includes the fixes described here? The patch notes say "Improvements to AI and performance" which sounds promising but wanted to double check before diving back in. Thanks!

Hi again. Just checking in to see if the difficulty rework discussed here has been implemented in one of the recent patches, or is no longer on the cards for the future? I'm pretty keen to get back into Old World and the new DLC but if I still can't beat Carthage #3 and #4 it won't be much fun for me. Please let us know. :AOESheep:

Yes, these were reworked a while ago. In addition to the scenario-specific changes, another mechanics change is that ships can now move into cities, which helps Carthage quite a lot, you can hide your ships in there as needed.

Keep in mind that all scenarios have three difficulty levels, so if the default medium level proves a bit difficult, you can try the lower level.
Great news! I look forward to jumping back in soon then.
I am Now playing this scenario in Feb 2025, seen like everyone is maybe gone after two years.
Anyway, I managed to complete a silver victory on my first try on default medium level, but I found it very hard and borderline stressful, I had to slow down, take a deep breath and look at all my options and calculate every move before using those few orders.
I really enjoyed @bear_able posting. I Cannot imagine how it was before the scenario rework. I managed to protect Panormus the first time, overcome the ship rush and invasion of africa only to loose Panormus on the second attack, I was then unable to take Panormaus back and unable to unlock the other achievement leaving me with a silver victory. Oh and then I got the silver when being lucky i made Turreted Elephant and got the last achiemevement for silver. I came her to get some information from other players wondering if i should try this scenario again. Maybe I will, we will see.
