can't play, fail to create account

bought game, played tutorial for about 3 hours, various dying. starved out of the tutorial.
then the game went to a red exclamation point and black screen.
tried suggestion from reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/onehouronelife/comments/g7f0ly/login_failed_what_to_do/
cleared account settings.
now steam says it failed to create me an account on the server.
