Can I play this game alone?
It really frightens me when I realize that the other people are not NPCs but players...I am afraid of being in the middle of real persons, I want to play this survival game alone...

You can either host a server yourself or use another server which no one else is playing.
Check the server list -
http://onehouronelife.com/reflector/server.php?action=report .
Choose one of the less played servers and copy the name.
server6.onehouronelife.com : 8005

Open one hour one life and go into settings.
Tick the custom server box and paste the server name in the box provided.
Then you can begin a life in the custom server where no one else is playing.

If you live to 60 and die of old age in the custom server you spawn where you died so you can continue building your town.

Thank you for this! I am terrified of playing with lots of random people when I'm so new I don't even understand the controls or basic crafting yet. I would be nothing but a detriment to their community and couldn't handle the hatred I would rightfully receive. I'll play alone a bit until I know how to survive.

Oh please don't feel that way. You should come play and learn with us. Part of the fun is being born not knowing anything and someone teaches you how to farm, how to eat right, how to bake. There is always someone in every town willing to teach a young kid. You build bonds with your teacher. "She taught me how to make pies and how to survive." The best thing you can do is ask for help with a task. "Can you teach me how to farm these carrots?".

You won't receive any hatred. If people see you doing something wrong they will tell you the right way to do something. If the town is really struggling for food which is not often the case, they might not have time to teach you but don't take it personally. In established towns there is always people willing to help.

Just come play with us. Play the game the way it should be experienced as a community working together to build something for the next generation.

We were all new once, we had someone give a few minutes of their time to teach us a couple of jobs and we pay that forward.

Your reply was very kind, but this hasn't been my experience. Every time I was born into a civilization people were generous in that my mothers fed and clothed me. But nobody had time to really teach me anything. I kept saying I was new and asking for instruction of anything to do. People asked if I knew how to make pies, and when I said no they ... just didn't teach me anything. Or if they were trying to teach me it didn't happen in a way I could understand or replicate. I really was paying attention and trying my best, but was unable to see whatever they did or remember all the steps involved. There was no simple job I could throw myself into to be useful, and other than breast milk or berries I never even learned what foods I could eat.

The lack of ability to communicate easily with other villagers is a major drawback. The speed at which you starve to death, coupled with the scarcity of food and penalties for eating the same food often, mean this game is a real death trap for newbies.

I was okay with knowing I would die a lot while I was learning. I'm not okay with the fact that I JUST die a lot and am not learning.

That is why it's not recommended to fully rely on others to learn more. It's better to know each item one step at the time. You can try to do that in tutorial mode for example, and find items in search. Example is /mutton pie or something less complex like /kindling.
There are plenty of guides in One Hour One Life forums. Also you should carefully take a look in food list, since it will be very vital when building up tech, especiallly if you decide to play alone.

The issue I had/have, is I don't live long enough to learn how to do anything.

Yep, I think that's what's happening to all of us this weekend.
