/die. For some reason only works if you're being held by mom. Find a wolf or something otherwise.

it's an attempt to make suiciding babies easier on everyone. There are many reasons a player doesn't want to live in a particular setting he's born into and before the command was added, babies would just run away and suicide constantly, but if you were in a big village, you'd just go thourhg every fertile women of it and putting them on cooldown preventing other players to spawn into that village.
The /die command will insta kill you if your mom holds you and you're under the age of 1. This will also lineage ban you from that family line so you don't go through every women of that lineage, and also your mother won't be on cooldown for the next baby.

Yeah maybe it's the roleplay thing.

Here is a great forum thread where the dev explains his reasoning behind the /die and why you need to be held. https://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=4297

Keep in mind, when you are held, you cant stop being held for the first minute of your life.

To quote "-It only works when held, because I still want you to have to face and live through abandonment as a baby. I don't want you to have an easy way out of that. Your mother should be able to feed you to a bear or snake, etc., and you have to live it out. Or if you're trying to follow your mother and get lost."

Also keep in mind that if you're playing on a small population server, the lineage ban is reduced; if there are 10 or fewer of you, there isn't a ban at all. So using /die in those situations won't help.
