Controller Issues? Look here!
We know that your controller is a major part of your experience, so we understand your frustrations! Here's some quick updates.

1. We are aware that the button configuration has an issue where your controller type is not properly reflecting button icons. This is a bug and it is being fixed!

2. Accepting and Cancelling can be confusing, this is because we used the SEGA Default for Japan. Swap Attack / Jump buttons. When you exit the config it'll be in the nice Western style you always preferred.

3. As above, in order to map you need to hit Confirm once to open up the mapping read, then tap the button you want to use for the action listed. The reader will close in 9-12 seconds if no valid buttons are selected or something goes wrong.

The downside to having an open controller config where you can literally map any action to any buttons is that it can get complicated! We're working on smoothing out the process.

If you were using any sort of third party mapping, Steam, Joy2Key, etc, please disable it before launching the game. This should clear up any issues with controllers not being detected.

Another controller issue is how sometimes it becomes unresponsive after loading or exiting a level.

Probably aware of that already and already fixing things.

Also the controller is frequently unresponsive after accessing the Steam Overlay or Alt-tabbing out.

The game straight up doesn't recognize my PS5 controller, not sure if that's just not a supported controller, it works with other games fine. Thankfully I was able to use the Steam Controller Config to map the buttons to keyboard keys.

It's exactly the same for me. The game should detect your controller if you activate it _after_ starting the game, but not if it is connected before launch (hopefully this'll be amended too). Then there is still the button mapping issue mentioned above which you have to correct manually for the time being, but I reckon this will be fixed very soon.

didnt detect my ds4 controller at all, using ds4windows to get it to work, though its showing the wrong inputs in the menus as others have mentioned. up and down on the d-pad are flipped, left and right show as axis 6, x is showing as square, square as circle...
R1 and L1 are right, so thats something I guess :V

Managed to get the controller to work and respond but the default layout (at least on PS controller) is really difficult to understand. The expectation is X-Jump, Circle-Special, Square-Attack, Triangle-Block (And pause wasn't even controller mapped by default). The problem is, when remapping it causes conflicts when navigating the menus. There's also some other issues like D-Pad not allowing menu navigation by default as well. Don't know how your Input system is structured but it'd be appreciated if you could add options for actual controller icons for clarity and keep game controls apart from menu controls.

(Overall, still loving the game and world. Amazing work)

Can there be an update where we can separately map menu controls?

Tried to remap my DualSense so I could use digital rather than analogue input. Up on the d-pad binds as right, Right is left, X is Square...

Kind of annoying

My PS4 controller is never recognized after starting a new menu/level. Is this a known issue?

Having this same issue. Buttons are all over the place.

xbox 360 controller not binding properly. I set A to jump and B for attack, but it then makes BOTH buttons do jump and i cannot do a ground attack.

Same here, exact same issue. Makes it really difficult to set the proper buttons, especially since you have to start a level to check them each time.

I was able to somewhat work around this issue by disabling configuration support for the DualSense controller in Steam (Steam -> Settings -> Controller -> General Controller Settings -> uncheck PlayStation Configuration Support). This isn't a permanent fix though, and unfortunately in my case I've also been using a Steam Link, where that setting doesn't work because Steam Remote Play relies on Steam Input.

On the other hand, on my laptop with Fedora 36, running the game on Proton actually works perfectly fine with the DualSense controller.
